Being VERY cautiously excited about the appointment with my new doc to talk about a replacement wheelchair... Actually going well? Truly, I'm not used to that!
It's rare to come out of these things actually feeling a little hopeful. I might have a chair that doesn't break all the time? Is designed to be more thoughtful of bodies like mine? With a power assist as a real possibility?!? Wild!
UK politics has a number of problems with accessibility for non-majority groups... we're familiar with issues around ethnicity & gender, but are less clear about how ableism has effectively barred disabled people from our political institutions;
the disproportionally low number of disabled people in politics, is not only a crisis of representation, it also means policy is shaped by the prejudices & incomplete knowledge of the able.
Disabled and chronically ill person withbsupport needs is raising money for basic necessities, food and an immigration Visa to remain in partner's country.

California shouldn't "need" a lawsuit that's related to disability & elections. I mean it seems like a very easy call. But you never know with centrist Democrats sometimes.
Make sure you're assessing your situation: What would you do if power went out due to the utility shutting it off to reduce fire risk or due to too many people using the grid at the same time? Need to replace batteries? Have enough ice packs on hand? What's your emergency plan, esp if there's a fire & you have to evacuate during a heat wave?
If you're abled, ask disabled friends if they'd like help and what form they want that help to take in an emergency.
In case there ends up being a wildfire during a heatwave or there's another natural disaster that affects you as a disabled person, The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies has a hotline you should put in your phonebook.
#NewYork Education Department Hindered an Abuse Investigation at Boarding School for #Autistic Youth
A judge ruled that the agency must cooperate in a #disability rights investigation into Shrub Oak International School, which charges up to $573K/year but has no meaningful oversight.
A ProPublica investigation found that would-be whistleblowers could not get state authorities to intervene at the #school.

Prepare for rising heat ahead of time. Check batteries for items you need in case there are planned shut-offs by utilities. Replace those that are dying or dead. Keep rechargeables charged. Freeze bottled water so you have cold water available if power goes out. Repair or replace fans you need.
Think through your needs when it gets hot, including if the power goes out. Prepare now.
@ucaccessnow Stuff your fridge water bottles or jugs and your freezer with ice packs which won't split open when frozen solid. This will keep your food safely chilled far longer during outages, no matter the cause.
Generally I'm seeing a lot of people these days post media without #AltText and being blasé when confronted about it. Some correct their habits, but not all. Some add very cursory alt-text, clearly they couldn't be bothered doing more. And it really disappoints me, because good alt-text is not only necessary for disabled people anywhere, but also a boon for those with insufficient internet connectivity, AND a great supplement for any media when used thoughtfully.
Did you know that the employees with disabilities often have to go above and beyond to navigate and devise solutions for inaccessible environments?
This additional effort comes with significant mental health costs for these employees.
The burden leads to heightened daily stress levels.
Many people may take these basic necessities for granted, making it challenging for them to empathize with our experience of living in a world not designed for us.

We must stop using Darwin's "survival of the fittest" to justify the suffering of disabled people. While disability brings challenges like pain, fatigue, and inaccessibility, much alienation stems from societal attitudes and rigid decision-makers. This artificial alienation can and should be changed.
At last. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is launching an enquiry into the way the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) treats claims by ill and disabled people.
The focus will be on health checks that assess individuals’ eligibility for disability benefits such as personal independence payment and “fit for work” tests that qualify claimants for the disability elements of Universal Credit.
