atomicpoet,

Elon Musk is mocking the for returning to .

And you know what?

They deserve all the mockery in the world.

Few journalists have a spine. They keep kowtowing to Twitter even though Elon Musk loathes journalism, and openly voices disdain for it.

So of course, Elon Musk mocks the Press -- they don't stand up for themselves.

And quite frankly, if they're not willing to stand up for themselves, how can any of them hold Elon Musk accountable?

@emilydingwrites This was before Threads launched so it’s even more complicated now! And I didn’t factor in Substack Notes as well. Anyway, many people probably just mirror their postings across multiple platforms.

@rakyat
I nod in appreciation of this flow chart that feels accurate to me.

Mastodon it is for me. I dont see any problems here.

atomicpoet,

“It’s not fair to compare to Mastodon because Mastodon has been around for years and Bluesky has just been released.”

Actually, Bluesky has been in development since 2019.

That means it’s 3 years younger than Mastodon, and 1 year younger than ActivityPub’s validation by the W3C.

There’s also the matter of BlueSky receiving $13 million in funding while Mastodon receives $32,000/month from Patreon.

All things considered, it’s @Gargron who’s the underdog here.

atomicpoet,

The other way to look at is that this is what they’ve built after four years in development and $13 million in funding.

atomicpoet,

Of course, I realize that most people don’t care that this is a non-profit going against a Silicon Valley-funded corporation.

For the same reason most people don’t care about whether their food is organic vs. factory farmed.

But to those who do care, that should give them context about who builds what and how.

> Almost exactly six months after got taken over by a petulant edge lord, people seem to be done with grieving the communities this disrupted and connections they lost, and are ready, eager even, to jump head-first into another toxic relationship. This time with BlueSky.

tl;dr:

  • seems designed to get secondarily centralized in the "reach" layer (as they call it)
  • moderation is an afterthought

@rysiek > The “speech” layer should remain neutral, distributing authority and designed to ensure everyone has a voice. The “reach” layer lives on top, built for flexibility and designed to scale.

So... It's just a way to offload the cost of hosting data to third parties with retaining all of the benefits to capital that come with owning and controlling an arena of public discourse? Yikes.

Great article. What I took away from it is that BS decentralizes the bill and centralizes the profit.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

Was just asked by a friend if I wanted a #BlueSky invite.

My reply?

“Thanks but no thanks.”

Why?

Because I don’t need to see the app. I know the people behind it and what they stand for. The app can only ever be a manifestation of (or an initial misdirection from) that.

Expecting the wolf that took a bite out of you last time to this time act in your interests is how you end up as its dinner.

@filipesm @aral its flaws are that it was launched after AP was standardized and widely used.

Promoting the BS protocol right now is reckless and destructive. We need to rally around the protocols that are working, and improve them with extensions, not bottom up rebuilds.

The people working on BS know how much damage they could do, and they're continuing anyway, because they don't share our values.

Please don't give them attention. They need to disappear quickly.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@filipesm @aral the point of BS is to make a protocol that can be a product.

They don't build on open standards like ActivityPub because they want to own the network.

I've decided to ACTIVELY decouple from Twitter: Every day, I go back and DM at least 10 of my followers, telling them I've moved here and to follow me here instead (I remove them as followers after that DM). A number of them have set up accounts as a result.

Please do the same if you're more active here than on That's how you can help the

@TNLNYC I left my account over there up for about 7 months encouraging others to exit the platform, then finally left. I’m glad I’m out of there now.

“Meta officials had internal research in March 2020 showing that Instagram – the social media platform most used by adolescents after TikTok – is harmful to teen girls’ body image and well-being. But the company swept those findings under the rug to continue conducting business as usual, according to a Sept. 14, 2021, Wall Street Journal report.”
These charges have reemerged in a lawsuit filed by 41 states and the District of Columbia.

I don't think really cares if they lose advertisers or if they have to pull out of EU. They don't care about being a global platform, and money is just a possible side benefit.

What they do want is to control the political discourse in their home country.

The same is likely happening with ; expect similar changes to other platforms. Same about stopping non-US platforms ( ).

The long-term goal is to deplatform anyone not on the political far right. And it's working.

Would set such a nice precedent in the public consciousness which still seems to believe to some extent that these ridiculous companies are somehow a necessary evil.

I had a Twitter list "standard stuff" where I listed the core accounts I definitely wanted to hear about. This fav list grew over the years and had 120 users in total. These were active users that in the golden era posted every day. These were the ones I wanted to read whenever possible.

I wanted to see what's the status today so I went through every account and here's the result. By "inactive" I mean users who haven't posted anything in two months or more.

  • 20% have completely deleted their account (the list now has 95 users)
  • 36% still post frequently
  • 64% are inactive or quit using Twitter
  • 30% are inactive without any reason given
  • 23% of those who still post on X also have active Mastodon, Bluesky or Threads accounts
  • 1% quit and moved to Bluesky
  • 1% quit and moved to Mastodon
  • 1% is active on Threads

@rolle I deleted my Twitter account and moved to Mastodon. I have made accounts on Thread and Bluesky, but they only have a post pointing to my Mastodon account. I really enjoy spelunking in the streams, finding new people to follow in a slow and "organic" way, instead of being algorithm-fed!
