Baby beaver rescue in Colorado!

🐾We admitted a rather unusual patient today – a baby North American Beaver! While we do occasionally see beavers at our Center, this is by far one of the youngest we have admitted! 💚Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers discovered this kit just south of Denver alone, dehydrated, and near a deceased sibling. They trekked the tyke to our facility so our licensed rehabilitation team could assess it and provide a bit of TLC to the orphan. 🐾Once through the vital quarantine process, he’ll be immediately transferred to our partner Pauline S. Schneegas Wildlife Foundation. Young beavers can be lonely when on their own, and we’re fortunate to be able to move him to Schneegas where he can thrive alongside other young beavers, learning vital skills in their large specialized enclosure before returning to the wild once more. 💚For now, our Animal Care Team has settled him into one of Greenwood’s cozy enclosures, complete with a stuffed companion, some leafy branches to munch, and daily swim time on his own personal beach. We hope this little bucked-tooth buckaroo has a comfy stay with us before he joins his new friends in Silt.

Healthy/safety tip for the day (which I learned from folks here): never, ever rent snorkel gear, buy your own--because of the likelihood of catching something nasty from used gear. (in their case, and others, mono... but also a lot of other things).

Outbreak of Human Trichinellosis — Arizona, Minnesota, and South Dakota, 2022

"Among eight persons who shared a meal that included the meat of a black bear harvested in Canada and frozen for 45 days, six trichinellosis cases were identified. The meat was grilled with vegetables and served rare; two cases occurred in persons who ate only the vegetables. So, the conclusion here is:

Beer Traps Work*

But not in the way you think, at least in my experiment (sample size n=1).

The beer attracts slugs, and saw dozens of slugs climb INTO the slug trap, drink beer, and leave much fatter.

The wood rat in the backyard (after swigging a bunch of beer itself) then ATE a bunch of those slugs... must have spent 15 minutes finding all the beer filled slugs and tearing them to bits and eating them.

So, the slugs are dead... but not DIRECTLY through the beer.

Hmm, when did California lose it and start using plastic bags again at grocery stores? The pandemic? For awhile there I thought everyone was using (at the very least) beefier recycled plastic bags instead of throwaway plastic, but apparently someone lobbied someone so people are just buying more disposable plastic bags (at 10 cents a shot) in my neighborhood. 😢

(Nope... I do not go to the grocery store much, LOL).

AHA! Article from the LA Times... from August of 2023. Apparently there was a law (Senate Bill 270) passed which outlawed LDPE bags... but they moved on to HDPE (thicker) bags to bypass the law!!! So there was a period where no, there were not a lot of plastic bags as they figured a way around the law. https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2023-08-24/whats-the-deal-with-single-use-plastic-bag-bans
