This is an authoritarian (both left- and right- flavours), bigot, MAGA, TERF, tankie, anti-vaxxer, climate-change-denier etc. free zone. Conservatives and libertarians should be on their best behaviour too - I have a small amount of patience for your nonsense, and a large block button.

Okay, now I'll be serious.

From @NPR Trump thinks that copyright legislation he signed while president made Taylor Swift "so much money," it would be "disloyal" of her to endorse Biden.

I would imagine Swifties would be annoyed and offended by the idea of a guy trying to take credit for her success.

Disloyal? Wow.

I try not to think about what work in America would look like if Reagan had never become president and unions remained as strong now as they were in the 60s and 70s.

We'd probably be working 4-hour days, 4 days a week with all kinds of extra goodies. But nope. We let rich people dupe us into believing "trickle down" bullshit.

Okay, I'm thinking about gift giving today. A little backstory about why:

Every year my Father-in-law attempts to get my Mother-in-law a gift. She is a bit of a shopper, and is notoriously difficult to shop for. Every year he gets her something he guesses a woman would like (perfume, sweater, jewelry), and every year she doesn't really like it, and ends up begrudgingly using it or returns it. They have been married over 30 years, and seem to have a pretty good marriage otherwise. It's like she wants him to magically understand what she wants, and he is sort of equally bad at the whole thing too. I will never understand why they don't just have a conversation about this. Just for extra fun, she is the most bizarre gift giver, also, to the point that it has become an annual tradition that I show my friends what she got us. A small list of things we have gotten:

A couch cover with grapes on it
A sexy nightgown
A painting of the house they live in
A gourd painted to look like a cat eating a bird
A package of tea that I would have absolutely loved, stuffed with cheap tea bags
Children's Lego sets
Toy trains
Underwear that didn't fit either of us
A wooden board covered in seashells that is supposed to hold a curling iron
A waterproof bed cover

I could go on and on. Just to clarify this doesn't bother me or my husband at all, we actually get a kick out of the weirdness. I don't personally care about presents much, I'm more of an experiences person.

SO, if you've managed to get this far, how do you feel about gift giving/getting? Feel free to elaborate and give examples!

It beggars belief that the town I finished high school in (pop 19,000) had a ban on wood-burning fireplaces as early as the 1980s, yet San Francisco continues to allow them.

I really don’t understand user-hostile infrastructure like this in SF’s public parks. The main argument I’ve heard is that it’s to stop certain classes of visitor from ruining other visitors’ experience, but stereotyping one specific user group (skaters, in this example) is just old-fashioned bigotry.

Not to mention that this kind of (dubious) strategy isn’t even applied evenly. The worst experiences I’ve had in our public parks have almost entirely involved dogs, but I don’t see anti-dog infrastructure anywhere (heck, I don’t even see respect for, or enforcement of, existing dog regulations most of the time).

If you’re anti-EV, you’re pro-suicide-by-climate. It really is that simple. Yes public transit and smaller personal transportation conveyances (bikes, e-bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc. etc. ad infinitum) are vastly better transport options in dense urbanised areas (including a lot of the Bay), but ~70% of the US population don’t live in such areas [1], and we don’t have time to redesign, rezone, and rebuild that 70% in order to make it public transit / personal transportation compatible.

We have about a decade give or take to massively reduce our carbon emissions or we’re literally toast. And yes EVs aren’t even close to being enough, but they are a quick, substantial, and comparatively easy win that doesn’t require implausible solutions like rebuilding 70% of society by the mid 2030s.

One thing I have yet to see much of in this debacle is much if any empathy for the original project maintainer. From what I can gather they’ve been toiling away on this project for at least 2 decades, have faced mental health issues in that time that required them to take breaks from it, and that the alleged hacker potentially conned their way into a position of authority for the project.

I can’t imagine how awful they must feel right now, likely compounding their mental health challenges, and really hope that no one is piling on them. Working on can be a thankless job, and a small minority of users can be unreasonably entitled and vocal about it - I really hope those toxic types aren’t piling on.
