“A columnist at Israel’s Ha’aretz newspaper unearthed evidence that Netanyahu has intentionally propped up Hamas rule in Gaza — seeing Palestinian extremism as a bulwark against a two-state solution to the conflict.” https://www.vox.com/23910085/netanyahu-israel-right-hamas-gaza-war-history

about the Great Male Renunciation

“The Great Male Renunciation is the historical phenomenon at the end of the 18th century in which Western men stopped using brilliant or refined forms in their dress, which were left to women's clothing. Coined by psychoanalyst John Flügel in 1930, it is considered a major turning point in the history of clothing in which the men relinquished their claim to adornment and beauty.”

So there's an award-winning film named Snow In Midsummer that's widely discussed in Taiwan and elsewhere at the moment, it's about Malaysia's 13th May racial riots, an event that my mom experienced firsthand and which is only discussed in hushed tones. Not sure if it'll ever be aired in Malaysia.

This is cool - a look at Malaysia’s ubiquitous horse racing calendars which display Gregorian/Islamic/Chinese lunisolar & Tamil calendars as well as State and national holidays, festive dates for each community, religious observances, school holidays, and the Chinese zodiac — all on the same printed sheet of paper while maintaining clarity and functionality.

“Telling AI model to “take a deep breath” causes math scores to soar in study”

This reminds me of how LLMs trained to recognize skin cancer from photo samples… learnt to look for the presence of a ruler (Because medical images of cancerous lesions include a ruler for scale)

Which are both hilarious illustrations of how LLMs actually work.

Western journalist may not know this, but became HUGE in Taiwan during the Taiwanese elections and it’s the perfect example of how Threads managed to capture entire markets that Twitter failed to attract.

And today, my Threads timeline is full of Taiwanese threatening to switch to platforms where they can freely talk politics (they are currently looking at Taiwanese platforms like Miin and Plurk. I hope they take a look at the rest of the Fediverse as well).

This is fascinating. The top line reflects Chinese population throughout history & bottom line reflects Europe’s population. China’s centralized political landscape is conducive to population booms during peaceful times, but each time political power crumbled resulted in huge population decline comparable to Black Death in Europe. Meanwhile, despite its frequent wars, Europe’s fragmented nature means that damages tend to be regional with relatively few deaths.

Translation: “Western-style democracy is a primitive, DIY form of democracy, requiring active participation from the people to make decisions. Chinese-style democracy is highly advanced, fully automated, and doesn't require you to speak up or take any action. The only flaw is that the automation level is so high that if you occasionally want to participate manually, you’ll get arrested.”

See? I told you is HUGE in Taiwan.

“The success of Threads in Taiwan shows that politics is still one of the main reasons people come to a text-based social network, but it also highlights Meta’s uncomfortable relationship with political content on its platforms.”

“The aristocrats in the House of Lords told them they didn’t understand, that this automation would make things better for everyone. But it wasn’t improving things for anyone the Luddites knew or saw. They watched factory owners get richer and richer, their own families get thinner and thinner, and markets get flooded with inferior cloth made by child slaves working in unsafe conditions. So they continued breaking the machines.”

Following Taiwan's election of a new DPP president, China is pressuring Taiwanese celebrities to post support for "reunification" with China. Many celebs complied & are now seen as traitors & boycotted in in Taiwan. Meanwhile, China netizens are sharing a huge list of Mandopop celebs who failed to vocally support “reunification” as boycott targets, and the boycott list also includes Mandopop celebrities from Malaysia, Singapore & elsewhere who didn’t vocally support China’s claim on Taiwan 🤷‍♂️

This is a good reminder from a China person living in Thailand - Thailand is still relatively conservative & oppressive and is only “free” in touristy bubbles where law enforcement is lax & retains the rights to persecute. In comparison, Taiwan is truly free in the sense that you can do many of the same things without risk of legal persecution.

Know your freedoms.

We stumbled upon this Chinese Muslim mee tarik stall inside The Intermark food court, food is good & affordable so give it a try if you’re around Ampang Park area.

📍 Ma Yi Lan Ramen

(we were originally headed for another mee tarik restaurant that I used to frequent nearby but it closed for Raya)
