In case you missed it, the EU Commission today announced they are opening up formal proceedings into X (Twitter), for dissemination of illegal content, the effectiveness of measures taken to combat information manipulation on the platform, lack of transparency, and deceptive design of the user interface.

Iโ€™m so tired of the capitalist argument that an open source project cannot be successful because itโ€™s based on nonprofit or donations instead of vc funding and corporates.

Some people seem to actually believe in this narrative that Linux, Mozilla products and the Internet itself are all alive solely because of for-profit industries while forgetting that the actual people, inventors, universities and organisations do exist in this world. Also the contributing factors by companies do not nullify the brilliance of the original project. FFS, it is not all because of the money.

@rolle Humans have been collaborating and organising to make and do stuff since far before capitalism, money, or even civilisation was invented. They all kind of get in the way of so much stuff that could be invented but gets pushed aside because it's not profitable enough

Social media is social. On X it is pretty hard to be social when you have to pay for it (literally and figuratively).

On Mastodon everything you do is social. Likes have no meaning other than for good spirits, so people have a conversation mindset. Boosts have a large meaning, they are the only algorithm, so people are boosting with low bar.

On Bsky/Threads everything is mostly built on likes. People rarely re-share anything too ordinary, posts have to be EXCEPTIONAL to get shares or comments.

This is why I believe in open protocols over commercial war machines.

Almost everyone who says "Mastodon didn't work for me" on Bluesky seems to have posted only "me me me" stuff for months (if that) on Mastodon, followed about 10-20 people, never replied to anyone and then gave up because "nobody there, it didn't fly".

It seems there is a big misunderstanding how this free and healthy social media works. We are not here for the easy wins, likes, shares and dopamine spikes. We are here because we accept the fact we are not part of the commercial hype machine. We choose natural engagement over spoiling algorithms, we choose conversation and meaning in our social media. At least that is how I see it.

I got up very early to photograph the sunrise from the local mountain top (Glander, 1883 m). It was a hard hike up in the dark to get there in time. Unfortunately it was very hazy and the sunrise was behind clouds, but the view was still worth it.

Mastodon has some norms that are worth being aware of.

Accessibility is a core value here, & descriptions/alt text on your photos/videos are important for including blind, neurodivergent, & slow connection folks. Many won't boost posts that lack them.

Hashtags are key for connecting people, as there's no algorithm. You can follow them to see tagged posts in your Home feed.

PascalCase (capitalizing each word) makes hashtags legible to screen readers for blind users & easier for all to read.

While everyone's being nostalgic about what Twitter means to them, I may as well add my two cents.

I didn't give birth to Twitter โ€“ that was Jack and Florian. But I was its midwife and adoptive mother; for two months in early 2007, I was the code's sole guardian and caretaker.

I was also the first person to hate Twitter; back when it was SMS-only, I did the math and realized that my immigrant prepaid phone plan would charge me $2000/year to send and receive even a 2006-era number of tweets. ๐Ÿงต

That's another aspect to this that is so poignant for me, personally. I tried to make Twitter better. I tried to make Twitter the fediverse, back in 2008, and after I failed, I left and tried to make the fediverse a thing without Twitter.

That was not an easy task. For a long time, I truly felt it was my fault, personally, that we failed. The enormity of Twitter became oppressive, because it was so obviously the wrong thing, corrupted from its potential by capital and a lack of imagination.
