Microsoft Excel

I have an #Excel spreadsheet that for some reason reformats every single column when refreshed or a cell on the table is double clicked. This has just started happening and it's occurring with earlier versions of the same spreadsheet that presented no problems before. I have tried everything suggested by Microsoft to get Excel to stop reformatting the columns.

Has anyone else had this problem start recently?

@angiebaby

From superuser .com question (never heard of the site, i just searched)

"
In addition to "Adjust Column Width", it might help to set in the table properties "Preserve Column Sort/Filter/Layout".

...never run into this, myself, and the searching on it indicated that excel can get quite puzzling in its behaviour with refreshed pivot tables - but the above was about the only complaint about regular tables, all resizing to "current-data-size" when refreshed.

(1/2) I have been following the work of @stevensanderson and David Kum for a few years now, and I am excited to see the release of their new book 🥳- Extending Excel with Python and R 🚀.

The book focuses on the common conjunction and collaboration between data scientists and Excel users. This includes scaling and automating tasks with and and core data science applications such as data wrangling, working with APIs, data visualization, and modeling.

ramikrispin,
@ramikrispin@mstdn.social avatar

(2/2) Here are some of the topics the book covers:
✅ Read and write Excel files with R and Python
✅ Excel automation with R and Python scripts
✅ Data visualization with ggplot2 and Matplotlib in Excel
✅ Time series analysis and forecasting
✅ Regression analysis
✅ Embading R/Python applications and functions in Excel

If you are working with Excel users or you are using Excel and want to extend your capabilities, I recommend checking this book.

I built (and, more importantly, released!) a thing!

It's very early stages but it's actually functional.

It's a Vue.js plugin for building Excel Add-ins. Such broad appeal, I know.

https://github.com/demsullivan/vue-excel

This project is actually a byproduct of another big thing I'm working on.

Currently, I use YNAB for budgeting, but I've been putting sustained effort into getting my data out of the cloud and self-hosting everything.

I started researching options for budgeting software, and I really couldn't find anything I liked or that felt like it had enough features.

I decided, then, to just whip up something in Excel... which led me to the discovery of Office.js and the ability to build Add-ins for Excel using web tech.

Thus, vue-excel was born.

I may eventually release my budgeting tool for Excel, when it's feeling a little more mature and stable. Stay tuned... ❤️

Have discovered that if you type "he wagged a finger" into Word, it suggests a possible word choice error, and that you might have meant "waged".

If you swap it to "she wagged a finger", the grammar check passes it with no notes.

Can any experts offer advice on simple ways to make it send an email if a particular condition is met?

A quick search suggests needing to code something in Visual Basic, which is well out of my field of experience.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Further to this, I think what might be easier (for me, at least) is to automate having my Mac open the spreadsheets at a given time, so I can remember to review them and check whether anything has expired.

That part is relatively straightforward, though it does involve Calendar, Automator, Shortcuts, and whatever app the spreadsheets are in. But once it’s set I can forget about it.

kincaid,
@kincaid@mendeddrum.org avatar

@DJDarren pretty much. I mean, once it's in place it's a time saver, but you'll have to learn VBA (in reality google 'how to loop through files and send email vba excel'), test it, and maintain it...

@simonmic Thank you for clarifying that, and for giving a balanced look at the topic. I hear what you're saying, though it's worth remembering that the "it's not hard" thing is relative to one's current level of knowledge.

And I totally get that doing things the hard way can be fulfilling; I do it from time to time in other fields just because I can. As you say, it can be fun, and a great way to learn!

(Edit: I'm dumb, CONCAT)

My internet research is not working today. On Friday, I had found a way to add a semi-colon at the end of each cell with the Custom format cell and I cannot for the life of me find it again. What's the "take whatever the text is and add a character at the end"?

🤦‍♀️

[Even better if someone knows how to take two columns in Excel, and merge them with a semicolon between the both of them.]

stephanie,

I'm really outside of my comfort zone here. I'm trying to help myself a bit before AI is forced on us by converting one of my glossaries into a file that can be imported in the automatic translation tool.

However, I have terms with commas in them. It breaks the formatting and kills those equivalents.

I'm trying to understand the quotes, and how to isolate my commas, but I don't understand the explanations I find (so many quotations marks!!).

I think using a different separator than a comma would also work.

Anybody can help me?

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@governa I, for one, proudly announce that I choose to remain ignorant of most of excel's specific formulae and tricks with no interest whatsoever in learning them.

A spreadsheet is supposed to be a visualization of data, not a mini operating system. If it's no longer a data repository visualized, then it's no longer fit for being a spreadsheet.

And even as a data repository, you might make better use of that data as an actual database instead.

governa,
@governa@fosstodon.org avatar

@kzimmermann fair enough, I know where you're coming from. Software should be agnostic.
