Mechanical Keyboards

In the end, I've just finally decided to climb the Colemak-DH mountain.

I've never been a touch-typer but using 3-4 fingers per hand, moving hands here and there, I was able to easily play it at around 75wpm with basically no errors.

I've bought an past summer: I'm still struggling with the "normal" QWERTY (see layout here https://marcoxbresciani.codeberg.page/keyboards/ergodash/current.html), not yet able to go beyond 40wpm or so, with frequent errors.

@shooboo @AAMfP Decades of qwerty vim muscle memory. Fairly new to Colemak DK, a month or so in. Remapped direction keys only. Fumbling a bit, but my trick is to think of the letter/function before using it and my brain maps it to CDH. e.g. delete word, D W.

It is slowly creating new muscle memory.

Also avoid qwerty at all costs while learning.

@gak
If I'll avoid QWERTY while learning, it would take me an hour to send an email... 😅 how to manage learning and daily job?

Trying the 35mm Cirque Trackpad... Already works, mouse handling is much better compared to the 23mm version! The housing is a bit larger than the case, but I think that's not an issue 😁

Appeasing3819,

I'm currently at only 50 words per minute using my new 40% , I need to practice!

@Appeasing3819
I'm at about 30, started 5 days ago practising Colemak-DH on my ErgoDash bought last summer (and currently using daily with classic QWERTY).

And I also build a Bunchiez40, an open-source pocket-sized 40% ortholinear that uses mouse switches and has an OLED display.

Trying out this Mastodon/Microblog thing. Had a customized TKL keyboard plate laser cut, 3D printed and painted a case, hand wired the switches, and added keycaps. Geekhack link.

@Deceptichum I had three identical plates made, though one I modified very slightly. After accepting that I'd need to simply live with a split Left-Shift, it's been extremely usable.

Build 1 was BBC Micro inspired and is a simple flat sandwich with oak sides, DSA on the FRow, a Dolch-like "VSA" elsewhere, and Box Navies. This may still be the one I like typing on the most.

Build 2 was pre-lubed brown TTC, sloped 3d prints for the left and right, and stiff springs in the middle. In effect the entire board is a leaf spring. CSA keycaps from Amazon. This one has the double shift adjusted (courtesy of a dremel and a metal file) to be in line with what the ISO layouts do.

Another angle on this one, to really show off them layer lines!

Entire writeup with pictures of all three are on my geekhack thread. They're all a little too rough around the edges to make sense as anything other than personal projects, but they are usable and do have their charms, and I love building these things from scratch.

Box Jades sound awesome but are sadly too heavy for me. I switched them out for Box Whites in my Kimiko.

I've been enjoying the key switches I picked up: Akko Cream Blues; and JWICK T1s.

The Akkos have a nice clack sound if that's your thing, however the bump is too light for me. There's a noticeable bump, definitely tactile... I'd likely recommend them to someone with "light" tactile who wants to try a "regular" tactile..

The T1s provide a proper speed bump (67gf) but the sound needs improvement to my ears. When I have the cash for better switches I'll branch out from here.

Nouveau batch arrivé! J'attends les contrôleurs pour le début du mois prochain, et il va bientôt y avoir à la vente :

  • 4 Redox filaires
  • 3 Redox wireless
  • 7 trackballs 4 boutons + scroll ring

Customisation possible mais avec un à deux mois de délai d'attente (les pièces ne se trouvent pas au supermarché du coin)

morayner,
@morayner@craftopi.art avatar

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

Insanely detailed caps. Hand painted. Remember, these are literally the size of a single key on your keyboard.

@dhrystone This particular series isn’t my style, but I’m a big fan of JellyKey’s work, love the care that goes into the details.

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@jonnocohen Same. I wouldn’t get this one because it isn’t encased in resin and would be entirely too rough to press, but it’s a work of art nonetheless. 👌 Have wanted one of their koi fish designs (like on a space bar) for ages, but their recent releases just have too much weird “smoke” peppering the scene and distracting from the fish.

@calisti
I've spent 20+ years with an IBM Model M, then a few years with a Filco Majestouch 2 with Cherry MX Blue, then a GMMK 1 with Gateron SMD Blue and now I'm on a ErgoDash with Kailh Box White.
Wanted to test the Navy... let's see: maybe next summer while visiting Yushakobo store.

Typing on this split keyboard is really slowing things down, specially programming. I wonder if I will give up.

kirschwipfel,
@kirschwipfel@nerdculture.de avatar

Same here: was not a touch typer, was much slower for several month - but now I cab touch type and other key-combinations get fast and faster each week.

You're better than me: I've bought the ErgoDash in the summer, using it daily since then, but still can't put my head into touch-typing, yet. 😒

About a year since I got this to try to help alleviate my periodic hand and wrist pain. It didn't alleviate the pain; it eliminated the pain, and this has been a joy to write with every single day since I started using it.

AAMfP,
@AAMfP@fosstodon.org avatar

@rhys
Indeed. Same for me thanks to my . Wrist pain gone in a few weeks.
I still have to get used and I'm not a touch-typer, but I like it!

DodoTheDev,
@DodoTheDev@front-end.social avatar

I've gone full nerd and added a to my work setup. 2 x 22inch (55cm) monitors with my laptop screen as a third displaying the keymapp app from ZSA to show me where the keys are on each layer (I'm slowly learning) and now an old trackball which was sitting around in the office. I haven't used one since I was little, so I'll see how I get on with it for a week before I get my own.

DodoTheDev,
@DodoTheDev@front-end.social avatar

@chfkch @ayo
Yes, it's fast become my favourite. I had to use a standard keyboard this morning, and it felt so weird!! But it did take me a couple of weeks to get used to the split (even from a non-split ergonomic keyboard). I think it's mainly the matrix layout that's tripped me up, but I'm getting there.

ayo,
@ayo@ayco.io avatar

@DodoTheDev @chfkch i have a kinesis advantage 2 for my home office. I love the concave shape, but it’s not portable so I might go for these small ones next—though not any time soon I think 😄

barknmadknitter,

I’m looking for recommendations. I’m looking for wireless that supports cherry Mx switches. IT should also be fully MAC compatible. Does anyone have one you’d recommend?

AAMfP,
@AAMfP@fosstodon.org avatar

@barknmadknitter
Look at Falbatech website. I have an ErgoDash, but they have different things.
Or there are many others: Keychron, Ymdkey.com and so on.

Appeasing3819, Spanish

I'm planning on building myself a 40% !

Aliexpress has most of the stuff I want, but they only have aluminium cases and that will be much heavier that I want. I'm searching now for a acrylic case :ablobeyes:

These are the moments I remember Europe has a much more limited access to keyboard parts...

Appeasing3819,

@AAMfP i didn't know about that site! Taking a note

AAMfP,
@AAMfP@fosstodon.org avatar

@Appeasing3819
I've bought my (pre-built by them) ErgoDash there.
They have nice components, even though the choice of switches and keycaps is very limited.
For the switches, I've kept theirs (to have a pre-built, or I should've sent them mine...) while for keycaps I've used ymdkey.com: from China but with taxes included in prices and shipping eeen when buying from Europe. Pretty nice choices and nice prices.

Appeasing3819,

Hi!

I'm new here, figured I need to do a proper !

I'm a enthusiast, I like , , and my cats.

This account will not post about polytics.

I've moved to mas.to in regards of it blocking threads.

I hope we can get along well!

apfel,

The newest version of my (mostly) xiao-compatible ch552t MCU board, Miao.
Now available at keeb.supply in this all new, pcba-friendly version: https://keeb.supply/products/miao

(I'll update the repo once I'm back home after the holidays)

Top view of the board. some small components are visible next to a USB-C port: two tiny buttons, a few resistors and capacitors, some ESD protection, and the actual MCU.

To the bubble, is having a Christmas sale with the code XMAS20, as far as I can tell, this is the first time, the Air 75 V2 is offered at a discount.

preisi,

@mxk QMK and wireless? Something is fishy there...

mxk,
@mxk@hachyderm.io avatar

@preisi I do have the full height 75 model Halo75, which isn't QMK yet, but has excellent build quality, very nice key caps. I definitely am happy!
