siina, to random My favourite part of today is that it is raining hard and windy despite forecast insisting it is nothing but sun.
lanodan, @siina Meanwhile here it looks a bit bad but no rain (and clearing up). Yet forecast says light rain.

Infrogmation, to NewOrleans Old tile signs in New Orleans.
- Angelo Brocato. Ursulines St French Quarter. Ice cream shop here 1921 - 1981.
- Cigars & Tobacco. Camp Street, Central Business District. Probably for Lannis Bros Cigars, here c. 1889 - 1905.
- J. Disimone’s Restaurant. Carondelet Street, Uptown. The “597” was the address before 1895 renumbering.
4)“For Restful Sleep”. Broad, Mid-City. Sandman logo of Crescent Bed factory here 1910-1961.

#NOLA #NewOrleans #GhostSigns #Tiles #TilesTuesdayTile work in sidewalk in front of step into doorway. In decorative rectangular blue and white border, against grey background are blue letters with white outlines. Text: "CIGARS & TOBACCO".
Blue tiles with white lettering with black outlines laid in grey concrete sidewalk. Text: "J DISIMONE'S - 597 - RESTAURANT".
Concrete sidewalk has tile mosaic. White background. Artwork depicts a small fairy tale style man wearing a feathered cap, a red cloak, and green leggings. He stands within a crescent moon. With one hand he holds a white bag labeled "SAND". with the other hand he scatters some grey sand down to the ground. Text in black letters at bottom: "For Restful Sleep".
Infrogmation, Well, these all are a form of commercial advertising from the time. Meant to be eye catching - but in a pleasant rather than annoying way, and clearly taking pride in work.
justafrog, @Infrogmation @noladon It's a completely different philosophy, right?
Most modern shops are very cautious to avoid making permanent changes to what are usually rented premises.
So often it's a chain of some sort, so they have to follow the chain style, too.
It's so dull and impersonal.
DavidDarnes, to random Streaming platforms should be recutting audio on their movies so the dialog can actually be heard when watching on a home TV or a mobile device.
I know they’ve done it for big Dolby cinemas or whatever, but it just doesn’t seem fair or accessible
pcdevil, @DavidDarnes Vox has a very good video on the topic where they analise why everyone needs subtitle (I promise it's understandable even with my phone'se speaker 😅): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYJtb2YXae8
Thomas Flight also have a video on a related topic: he analysis why you can't hear dialogues in Tenet (and why Christopher Nolan directed in such way): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIgznB0-ICo
I recommend both, they are very insightful!

Australian federal police say ‘officers arrested a man after he allegedly ran naked through the aircraft mid-flight and knocked a crew member to the floor’
Recently, with memories of the floodings still fresh, Vermont lawmakers voted to assess a fee on fossil-fuel producers to pay for “climate-adaptive” infrastructure projects in the state. The bill operates on the polluter-pays principle, the basis of the federal Superfund law—it’s been dubbed the Climate Superfund Act....
kb, to random Do you remember how when the first mRNA Covid vaccines became available, you got a strain of person who would say “I’m not anti-vaccine, I’m just waiting for a non-mRNA vaccine”? And then when Novavax became available, those people all mysteriously found other reasons not to get vaccinated?
That is the way to think about people who say “I’m not anti-environment, I just think we should invest in carbon capture and storage/hydrogen fuel/…”.

perkinsy, to random After leaving the Otways to return home we decided to eke out our holiday even more. We decided not to go the usual way home - that horrendously boring, straight Geelong/Melbourne highway and the roadworks around the Westgate Bridge. We decided to catch the Queenscliff-Sorrento Ferry instead. This was the first time I had ridden on it. It was also the first time I had been this far down the Bellarine Peninsula.
I took this photo from the top deck of the ferry before it left Queenscliff for the 40 minute journey to Sorrento.
perkinsy, I often struggle with sea sickness largely due to the vibrations of the engine. The Queenscliff-Sorrento's engines are so smooth and not too noisy. The waters of Port Phillip Bay were flat and sparkling, the sun was shining and there was not a cloud in the sky. The only thing that detracted from the perfect scene was the brown smudge on the horizon above Melbourne. One downside of having no wind is the pollution just sits there.
We stood outside on the top deck for the entire journey. There we had a nice chat with a retired truck driver from Wollongong who was returning from a road trip to Perth. He decided to take his caravan on the ferry and avoid going through Melbourne altogether.
This photo shows the sister ferry that does the same route and was going the other direction to us.
I have learned over many years that photos of the vastness of the sea are very boring so I didn't take any others. However I regret not taking a photo of a seal that was relaxing near the ferry with one fin sticking up in the air.
