Disabled people are treated like our bodies, our stories, are public property - especially so for those of us who are Aboriginal, who are Black, or People of Colour, who are trans or queer, or read as women.

Consider that if someone with a disability is posting their mutual aid links, either give/share/support or just move on.

Don't message us asking why we're disabled or why we're not on disability support pensions - that's nunya. NUNYA.

I'm a disabled Indigenous queer person who exists on Jobseeker, which means almost 50% ($269/week) below the poverty line ($489/week).

After moving house a few months ago (the first time in 10 years), I didn't get rent assistance because of a centrelink mistake. That mistake combined with the moving costs has left me almost $3000 in debt.

I'm in a new house with a new landlord, and am barely able to cover my portion of the rent at the moment, let alone pay for bills, medical costs, and food.

Please if you could consider helping, I'd be super grateful.

[NSW] Police frequently ignore Coroner's Office and Law Enforcement Conduct Commission about over-representation of Aboriginal people in criminal justice system, contradict own goals, don't report required data, & other failures. (12ft.io)

The title for the 12ft link to the SMH article is "Police should not be responsible for Closing the Gap targets, says commissioner", which is accurate, but even after a quick skim of the actual report, seems to very much understate the problems. This quote buried in the report is an example:...

Settler Reply Guys spending more time arguing about how it's not fair they're expected to do something about the referendum results.

Settlers using "we haven't been told by Aboriginal people what to do yet" as though their racism and white supremacist colonialism is our problem to fix.

Settlers pulling out the "you people" phrase in the replies.

I see you.

I'm watching Hotel Coolgardie with Greg and his wife, and we're talking about the picture of Australian men it paints.

Greg isn't so shocked by it, because I've told him stories about men here.. but his wife is horrified.

It's leading into really interesting conversations about misogyny within coloniser culture.

In Australia's Parliament this afternoon (16th Oct) there was a debate around The Water Trigger. The Bill needs to pass bc it is urgently needed to ensure that gas fracking projects don't harm local water resources and the local environment.

In NT two projects are in the final stages of authorisation. Both will poison water in the local communities.

As things stand, Dr Sophie Scamps and Zali Steggall argued boldly that NO Australian citizen should go without safe drinking water because of Fossil Fuel industrial projects. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-16/water-trigger-bill-to-close-fracking-loophole-introduced/102982456

Precisely.
Go without water ?
In Australia 2023 ???

Saturday's referendum NO-voters need to realise that the referendum wasnt about division, bc Australia has division and inequality ALREADY .

How about some fracking in Dutton's seat?? God forbid !!!! His supporters would demand a and rightly so.

How many Australians really KNOW anything about First Nations' hardships or how the machinery of White Australia racism really works?

Truth is, like all other globally, they are in the way of the colonising overlords who want to seize land and resources for their own use.

And historically those overlords just needed to "wipe out" those indigenous ppls by any means possible: massacres, displacement, theft, siege, exploitation, disease, death, imprisonment...

The way Australia's First Nations are being treated nowadays is nothing new. They are unheard and invisible and 60% of voters are just fine with that.

I was thinking about Treaty today, and why it's important that it's the first step in everything, and not the last.

When you start with Treaty, there is recognition that you are meeting with an equal.

Having Treaty first firmly frames everything else as a recognition of our Sovereignty and our right to self determination.

Having Treaty in place recognises our place as equals to the crown, not subjects of it.

Stop with your gaslighting bullshit.

Because a lot of you are new to this conversation, here are some tips about grammar.

  • Cap the first letters of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Island, and Indigenous.

  • Always type out "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island", don't use ATSI.

  • Don't use phrasing like "you people" or "those people" to refer to us.

  • If you're talking about a specific Aboriginal group, use the name instead of just "Aboriginal people", because our cultures are not monolithic.

You might see this as just grammar, but it's about respect.

referendum updates: Nation votes No to Voice to Parliament, with all six states rejecting change — as it happened - ABC News

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-14/live-updates-voice-to-parliament-referendum-latest-news/102969568

Godfrey642,
@Godfrey642@aus.social avatar

@cs
So the 97% Australians of Settler Heritage voted overwhelmingly against giving First Nations any voice at all at the big white table of government .

This shows that most of the AoSH majority have brought ALL their nasty prejudices (and ignorance) with them when they emigrated here and have learnt nothing.

This is going to be unpopular.

I keep seeing people say they're shocked how anti-Indigenous Australia is, and when I go look at their profiles they all have "leftist" written.

You all need to understand what this means for how your leftism is tied in to white supremacy.

If you're shocked to find out that a colonised country is racist, you haven't been listening.

If your leftist selves haven't been listening to Indigenous people on this Stolen Land, you're leaning into white supremacy.

Godfrey642,
@Godfrey642@aus.social avatar

@aby You can call it socialism or left leaning but what this referendum shows is both the overwhelming meanness of 2/3 Australians and/or the gullibility that they believed the dross swilling around social media.

An educated, empathetic and open minded population wouldn't have voted this way.
