Updated my streaming set top box shootout, so it's now Chromecast vs Fire TV vs Apple TV vs Shield TV vs Fetch Mini vs Hubbl.

That's a lot of TV watching. I think I need a break. Maybe I'll watch some... AAAARGH!

Does anyone here use one of those 3rd party knock-offs?

I dug my old ChromeCast out of a box to find it is no longer officially supported and struggles to stream 1080p from my Linux laptop.

I just want a dead simple dongle to plug in to my TV's HDMI and wirelessly stream my Linux screen to.

There are a bunch of dongles on eBay, but I've no idea if they work with .

So, if you have any suggestions - please let me know 🙂

Ah thanks ... some power saving option (apparently not in any menu) is wrecking and making audio high pitched and glitchy

but only if the laptop is unplugged. Same power plan while plugged in, it's fine

Having support (mDNS?) as well would make it perfect, but I guess that is more of a network/firewall issue than a major blocker

Is there any FOSS app or videoplayer for Android that can cast videos to Chromecast devices?

I know the Google Store has stuff like Anycast and such, but is there any open source thingy?

VLC for Android doesn't seem to have such an option. 🤔

Did a write-up of the chromecast/dns-sd script I have which uses vlc, resolved and some bash for parsing. Also a quick inclusion as well.

Wszystkie polskie komendy do Google TV Chromecast 4.0 HD, jakie są?
Dla Player, Canal+, Polsat Box Go, TVP VOD, Netflix?
Bo działa to bardzo wybiórczo.

Istnieje komenda, żeby włączyć konkretny kanał w aplikacji Canal+?
Bo serial da się włączyć, np. "Canal+ Belfer" włączy serial. Ale "Canal+ TVN 24" nie włączy tego kanału.

I recently noticed I can no longer share the screen of my smartphone with our Smart TV with its inbuilt .

I then made the mistake of installing , setting up an account, granting fine-grained location access rights, enabling WiFi connectivity right next to the RJ45 cable network connectivity because the app needs the device to be on exactly the same network as the smartphone, preparing to register the TV and then reading these terms & conditions.

Returned my unopened (duplicate) to Costco today and got a full refund.

My advice to everyone - don’t buy this device. Apple have the best implementation of an interface in terms of prettiness and speed, but the worst implementation of an actually efficient and useful operational environment in the entire ecosystem. They’ve shown up to someone else’s game wearing a Burger King crown and expecting everyone to play by THEIR rules. and have already given them the 🖕and are NOT integrated. It’s fucking horrible. It really is.

I’m still trying to force feed myself the koolaid with my remaining ATV but I fear that very, very soon it will be put back in its box and Craigslisted off to some gibbering goose who doesn’t know there’s far better tech out there.

I can’t wait for the new and Max. I have too many streaming devices already, but not as many as I have or . Still have to catchup.

My Amazon Fire TV just performed a large update. Big enough that the update screen didn't even show the Amazon or Toshiba logo.

For a moment, I got worried it would fail. It rebooted and didn't turn back on itself (powered off instead). When I finally powered it back on manually, it took a while, and even after the display finally came on, it kept "thinking" with the red standby light cycling.

That is the downside of owning a smart TV. The fear that an update could brick it.

Imagine that...

Owning a smart TV and opting into the paid subscription, only to end up using your computer to use the subscription, because the TV insists you purchase things that is included with your Prime Membership.

I factory reset my Amazon TV and have not logged back in ever since.

I bought myself both a Google Chromecast and a Roku Premium. Both work better than Amazon. I would not recommend buying an Amazon TV.

The downside of owning a Chromecast is I needed to opt into the preview release of Google Home to obtain regular updates.

Before doing so, my Chromecast software would have been 6+ months behind.

Because I simply don’t have enough dumb streaming sticks/devices I just HAD to go out and get another one today. The wife has a small 1080p TV in the chick cave to watch news and whatnot while working. And she’s been happy with her . But I had a problem with it. We’ve been gravitating more to the / world and both of our new TVs by default use that. Different front end than a . I wanted her to have GoogleTV on the chick cave unit so when I heard that Staples were flushing out older HDs I went hunting them down. In store clearance only. And I got one today. Only $12! A little slower of a device but now her recently watched crap can persist across multiple tellies.

I have like six or seven Firesticks here gathering dust now. Not exaggerating. I truly need an intervention.

Do you want to give your Chromecast a boost in both performance and stability?

Uninstall and remove the YouTube app. 😉

I did so a while ago, both on my TV's Chromecast and on my Google Pixel 7 phone (including YouTube Music and alike). I have seen improvements on both.

6 month now (1/2 a year) and that advantage has remained consistent even through regular system updates.

Linux_Is_Best, (edited )
@Linux_Is_Best@mastodon.social avatar

The bonus is even if you're not a Google Chromecast user, but rather are a Roku or Amazon TV user, removing (or disabling) the YouTube app will still save you space and improve performance.

I tested Roku, Amazon, Google Chromecast, and Google Pixel. The difference in performance and saving space too, was a win regardless of the device. 👍

A few weeks ago I bought a Google ChromeCast (4K, with Google TV). A week ago the remote app on my Android stopped working - web searches on the symptom reveals that This Just Happens To People Nobody Knows Why.

Last night, the ChromeCast just stopped working. No symptom, just no video showing.

Beginning to feel like is just a deeply shitty, broken product. Shame on you, Google.
