With #mastodon 's dominance on the #fediverse, I think it's worthwhile to conceptualise what it means for a platform to be a good or bad citizen on the fediverse.
In mastodon's case, I think the argument could be made that more could be done to promote diversity (in both masto-instances and other platforms). Can't have fediverse without diverse.
Interestingly, by comparison, @pixelfed impose a default limit of 1000 users per instance for exactly this reason: diversity.
@cliffwade Inevitable, I agree. The scammers/spammers go where the users are. The more people that move to the #Fediverse, the more we can expect this.
I've been in the #openSource scene for a long time. From BEFORE this was even called "open-source" — back BEFORE the phrase "open-source" even got coined and became common.
Here is a problem with most open-source software projects have, including most #Fediverse software —
The thing is, I know there are people with these skills — UX researchers, UI designers, illustrators, industrial researchers, QA specialists, project managers, strategists — who want to get involved with #openSource projects.
But they don't know how.
This is a problem for open-source. But it is also a problem for the #Fediverse.
I haven't tested Bluesky but I can say that if Mastodon wants to stay competitive (and I hope it does), it needs to address SEARCH & SURFACING fast.
The first open-protocol network that enables news and fast breaking events to surface easily and with functional search will win the market. You'll see journos, sports, etc. migrate to the platform that gives them that visibility.
There is a window of opportunity here but it doesn't stay open long.
I'm excited about #calckey's "#antennas" which seem to be an enhancement of #Mastodon's "#filters". The cool part is you can use boolean logic in search terms, and you can also search for terms which works like Mastodon's hashtag subscriptions. #activityPub#fediverse
Assuming malicious intent in others is a common mistake that can lead to unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings. Often, people jump to conclusions without having all the information or context about a situation. It's important to remember that not everything someone does or says is meant to hurt or offend you.
Before reacting angrily or taking offense, take a moment to consider the situation from different angles. Try to take into account factors such as cultural differences, personal background, or just general lack of awareness. Instead of assuming you know what someone meant or why they acted a certain way, ask for clarification or give them the benefit of the doubt.
Effective communication involves actively listening and responding in a non-judgmental, open-minded way. Don't assume you know everything or that someone is out to get you.
Keep an open mind and seek to understand the other person's perspective. This promotes a culture of mutual respect and understanding, something that's really lacking on social media platforms and that I hope the Fediverse will foster.
By embodying these values and promoting them within the Fediverse community, we can create a space where people feel safe to express themselves and engage in constructive dialogue, and where positive change can happen. #fediverse#respect#openminded#understanding
@evan While I'm not inherently against competing protocols, it's really hard to see BlueSky as anything other than an attempt to (a) keep the fediverse from succeeding, and (b) taking over a "growing market".
@evan Rather than an obligation, I see it as strategically beneficial.
By making at least a minimal effort to publicly chart a path towards interoperability between the #activitypub powered #fediverse and other open (but not outwardly cooperative) protocols, we can effectively reveal their true motives.
Extend a genuine invitation of cooperation, then we’ll see whether they act in accordance with the ethos of the convivial open web or the winner-takes-all mindset.
I think, one of the reason used against this feature from way back in 2016 (when Mastodon first came out), was that it disconnects the conversation. Once it's disconnected, you do not know what's happening (borders on moderation already).
I remember saying then and now that it doesn't have to be. A QuotePost/QuoteReply can still be shown within the same thread.
Since it was all about choice and permissions, I suggested the following: Original Poster
toggle: disallow quoteposts/quotereplies (default is false)
if above is false, then, toggle: allow quoteposts attached to your thread (default is true)
QuotePost/QuoteReply
if “disallow quoteposts” == false && “allow quoteposts attached” == true, then offer
toggle: disconnect from the original thread (default is false)
I would like to think that most would keep it ‘false’. And if “toggle disallow quotepost” is true, then the only way is to manually copy the link into a new post (not using the quotepost feature itself).
It satisfies the OP's desire to make a decision about quoteposts/quotereplies; while at the same time, it also satisfies the freedom of the other users.
It isn't perfect, and it's probably not a good idea to implement this level of control/permissions. But, I think it addresses the concerns of both parties in the debate.
I, for one, would prefer quoteposts/quotereplies to be attached to the original thread. But, at the same time, I want to give the users an option to ‘disconnect’ from the original thread.
Anyway…
When you are quoteposting/quotereplying to a thread in #Calckey, the quotepost/quotereply still shows in the original thread, like this one, when viewed from Calckey. It doesn't when viewed from other #fediverse / #MycelialNetwork software.
If Bluesky was a benevolent initiative they would have spent some small part of their many millions over the past 3 years engaging in meaningful dialogue with the world's foremost decentralised social network: the fediverse. They didn't do that.
They did try to poach some key figures from fedi's tech pool though, no doubt offering salaries well above what most here earn.
Audon is a great real-time audio streaming service for the #fediverse! Think Spaces or Clubhouse, and you pretty much got it. You create a room for audio, where other people can listen to you, or just give them the role of speaker as well.
You can easily log in with your fediverse (Mastodon/Calckey/Pleroma) account, create a room, share the link, and you're ready to go!
It's interesting that we are finding it hard to move past the "policing" of language use.
Do you think this is useful to think of as legacy "stupid" #postmodernism that nobody can be more right than anyone else, maybe this is a good example of the capture of the idea of imperialism
Would be funny if it did not matter, we have so much compost to shovel.
When a group of people come in to the #Fediverse with an imperialistic agenda and processed to hide this agenda, we end up with lots more mess and a bad smell at best or real damage to our commoners at worst. It's important that we catch his early and try and mediate for a less stinky and damaging outcome.
They are often trying to help, let's try and work with them if we can. But please PUSH back hard if we can't, keep it polite #FULFFY is best.
@spreadmastodon Agreed with what others say here: why on earth would you withhold from newbies the info that the #Fediverse is diverse, decentralised and empowering?
Promoting only a single mega-instance is harmful to the Fediverse and even to #Mastodon as a part of it.
Right so there are quite a few bits and pieces in #calckey that are far from ideal. We now the good, it is time to point out the ugly:
Why can't we filter boosts? This renders any timeline unreadable if you follow more than 100 users.
Why can't we get help? With mastodon, people see you in the local timeline. You can ask info, but since problem 1 (boosts can't be hidden) means the local timeline is whatever local people boosts more than their own genuine thoughts, they can't see you asking for help.
Edit button. But it's coming.
Those are the 3 I've compiled so far. And the boosting issue is really getting on my nerves. SPECIALLY now that I've brought in all my follows/followers.
