Blaise Pascal, the philosopher born just over 400 years ago, made what is know as "Pascal's Wager" about the existence of #god.
He argued for betting on the existence of God. “If you win, you win everything; if you lose, you lose nothing,” he wrote, positing that although one cannot know for certain whether or not God exists, we are better off believing in God’s existence than not.

My 6-yr old asked one of the BIG questions the other day.
"Daddy, why do we live?"
Knowing that he's being influenced by the ubiquitous #god botherers, I responded:
"Because of #electricity, little buddy. Kind of like the lightbulbs in our house, we all have a #spark in us that runs through our #bodies and #brains. When that spark goes out, we die."
He thought a bit about that, and then came the next BIG question:
"We become a part of the electricity that runs through the entire #planet that let's everything live. Which is super important, because without that electricity, nothing would live."
#Republicans will continue to lose elections until they come to terms with humanity having beliefs that do NOT include #trump, #god or #guns
Until they figure this simple #fact, they will NEVER win a national popular vote. Failed #gop has walked away from THAT goal entirely. Thus the need for #gerrymander
The chasm separating us from those who hurt us, esp ⚪️ evangelicals, is not of our creation so we can’t seal it. We won’t get to wholeness pining for them to come to their senses & cross over.
So I am a week into my #Zizek#Lacan#Hegel studies, through Zizek's lens. All good. I think Zizek's #philosophy of looking at Hegel through the Lacanian lens is seductive. That said, where I find the lens of Zizek lacking, and I now wish he'd not talk about these 2(3) things any more are:
I was a serious #catholic half my life, seminarian for minute, and an ordained deacon, still, even after I confessed my #atheism. So I get what he is saying. My atheism has never felt the same as #Dawkins or #Hitchens, whom we adore, and Zizek sneers. Slipping through the profound safety net religion and a transcendent, all powerful, personal god into the #existentialism of nothing was terrifying, it was my first experience of the "#real." This is it. This is all there is. The problem is it appears Zizek commits the #fallacy of #reification (if we understand it correctly). Clearly he knows it is #fiction, even if profound from a #psychoanalytic Hegelian #CriticalAnalysis, we get it we really do, but it is not real. The #event is real, and the fiction caused the event, but the fiction is still fiction. There is no God, IOP, that became an atheist. The #story Zizek emphasizes is powerful, the changing of the cosmos when #Jesus on the cross questions Gods love. Good story and that is all. As an #atheist, I'm struck by how many of the political problems the #UnitedStates is currently experiencing are driven by a citizenry who believe in, and clearly are living for, something called "the #rapture." A look around the various "social" media sites, including, and perhaps especially, #facebook, shows a goodly fraction of Americans are #God crazy. Anyone who says #religion is "a harmless crutch" is not paying attention. Without these voters, clearly there is no #Trump and no #GOP. #sad
