Think you don't know what qualifies as alternative fashion? I'm here to tell you that you do! Every time you notice someone's outfit being unique and different, you have identified alternative fashion. As said in the title, this is a massive category with an infinite amount of subcategories....
#GreatAlbums1990s – TOP 20 - #Nirvana - #Nevermind (1991). Mixing Beatlesque melodies with punk attitude and metal intensity feels obvious in hindsight. But just like it took a quartet of misfits from Liverpool to elevate the art of rock, it took a trio from Seattle to crystallize the urban underground in a way kids in burbs could appreciate. And with hooks even fans of The Wiggles could sing in their cribs, who couldn’t catch the elemental pop beneath all the irony? #GreatRockAlbums, #Grunge
#GreatAlbums1990s – TOP 20 - #Soundgarden - #Superunknown (1993). With its dark afflictions of angst and depression on tracks like “Black Hole Sun” and “Fell on Black Days,” Superunknown was an exorcism of emotion for the masses. Developing their metal-meets-rock lexicon, Soundgarden piledrives through tricky tunings and time signatures (“My Wave” manages to be heavy plus funky in 5/4 time) to prove themselves one of the finest rock bands of the 90s or any other era.
A powerful story about the emotional transformations that can come out of the relationship between artist and audience. I'm literally wiping away tears after watching this:
#GreatAlbums1990s TOP 20 - #AliceInChains – #Dirt (1992). One of the darkest-ever visions of addiction & turmoil by a major band, Dirt reflected Layne Staley’s (finally tragic) war with heroin on songs torn from the pages of a stark confessional script. Jerry Cantrell’s leathery guitar tones and the Sabbath-infused grind of the rhythm section give “Dam That River,” “Down in a Hole,” and the blistering “Rooster” gravitas as profound as any rock/ metal disc of the time. #GreatRockAlbums, #Grunge
#listening to the Alice in Chains album Dirt. Back in the 1990s I was really into Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, but I never really gave AiC their due. TBH I think they were a bit subtle for me.
Anyway, I got into AiC in a big way after listening to their full albums on The Grunge podcast a couple of years ago. Those vocal harmonies, wow! Now I see them as one of the most underappreciated bands of the 90s.
Those were some good days hitting up the local music store. Then jamming in the car on the way to go to the river for some inner tube floating. Fun times!!!
Dimanche soir 20h, petit concert dans un pub à Bordeaux, on a préparé une petite playlist jazz-grunge si vous voulez venir écouter ça.
Y'aura #Gretschen !
#GreatAlbums1990s – #ScreamingTrees - #SweetOblivion (1992). One of the earliest bands to be tagged as “grunge,” the Trees had roots more in 60s nuggets like The Seeds or Count Five than the 70s punk plundered by their Seattle-area brethren. Mark Lanegan’s whiskey-cured voice gave songs like “Nearly Lost You” and “More or Less” a flavor more bluesy than grungy, bolstered by the Connor brothers’ sinuous fretwork and Don Fleming’s meaty production. #1990s, #GreatRockAlbums, #Grunge
What makes a look alternative? Just ask yourself: do you see the day to day average person wearing this? No? Does it catch your eye for being different? Yes? Then it is likely alternative fashion! This category is massive.
