More than 1,500 lobbyists in the US are working on behalf of fossil-fuel companies while at the same time representing hundreds of liberal-run cities, universities, technology companies and environmental groups that say they are tackling the climate crisis, the Guardian can reveal.
Lobbyists for oil, gas and coal interests are also employed by a vast sweep of institutions, ranging from the city governments of Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia;
tech giants such as Apple and Google;
more than 150 universities;
some of the country’s leading environmental groups – and even ski resorts seeing their snow melted by global heating.

Dozens of governmental, educational, cultural and environmental organizations across the city of Pittsburgh have hired lobbying firms who work with planet-heating fossil fuel companies, new research shows.
The Pennsylvania city has almost entirely divested its pension funds from fossil fuels and plans to dramatically cut its planet-heating pollution. -- Yet in 2023, it employed lobbyists who also worked for ExxonMobil and seven other fossil fuel companies.

Both the school district of Pittsburgh and the Port of Pittsburgh Commission this year hired a lobbying firm which also works for 16 fossil fuel firms, including one tied to the Koch brothers.
And Pittsburgh cultural institutions such as the research-focused Carnegie Institute, the Frick Art and Historical Center, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, and the Pittsburgh Symphony have also employed fossil fuel lobbyists, as have the conservation group Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and the Pittsburgh Foundation, which funds climate advocacy.
All told, Pittsburgh has engaged in a more “extreme embrace” of fossil fuel lobbyists than any other large US city, according to the new research from "F Minus", a database of state-level lobbying disclosures released this year, and "LittleSis", a research database project created by the non-profit corporate and government accountability watchdog Public Accountability Initiative.
“For these lobbying firms, representing prestigious clients in the arts, education and philanthropy does wonders for their image,” said James Browning, executive director of F Minus.
“Instead of being the villains on climate, suddenly they’re heroes for children, for local conservation efforts, and for all kinds of good causes even though they’re also working for fossil fuel companies.”

Solange in #Deutschland weiterhin jeder klimatechnologische #Fortschritt sofort belächelt, in Frage gestellt, kritisch beäugt oder von negativer Berichterstattung begleitet wird, wird sich daran auch nichts ändern.
Wir haben ja gerade ein #EAuto gekauft und tatsächlich die ERSTE Aussage eines Freundes war: „E-Autos darfst Du auf keinen Fall kaufen, den wirst Du NIE wieder los. Zum einen ist die Sache mit den #Batterien doch noch gar nicht geklärt. Und dann die Problematik mit der #Reichweite“.
Diese Aussagen ließen mich tatsächlich komplett ratlos zurück. Auf meine Nachfrage, welche Sache mit den Batterien er denn genau meint, kam nur zusammenhangloses Geschwätz von Haltbarkeit, Zweitverwertung und Entsorgung. Als ich ihm daraufhin entgegnete, dass ich das Fahrzeug nicht mit dem Gedanken an einen Wiederverkauf erworben habe und Batterien in Autos bisher - entgegen der landläufigen Meinung - eher durch Langlebigkeit überzeugen, reparier- sowie austauschbar sind und ich zudem mit unserem Zweitwagen auch keine 1.000 km am Tag zurücklege, erntete ich Schweigen.
Als ich ihm dazu noch ungefragt mitteilte, dass ich einfach ein besseres Gewissen habe, wenn ich zukünftig kurze Fahrten mit einem Fahrzeug durchführen kann, dessen Kraftstoff ich per #Photovoltaik aus der Sonne gewonnen habe, war er ganz kaputt. Aber er versteht ja auch nicht, dass wir generell viele Fahrten komplett vermeiden und sie aufs #Rad verlagern.
Es gibt hier sehr viel Unsicherheit in weiten Teilen der Bevölkerung, die von der #Verbrennner#Lobby nur allzu gerne aufrechterhalten und sogar befeuert wird. Diese Stimmen haben unrecht, aber sind in Deutschland leider sehr laut. Auf der anderen Seite gibt es durchaus auch viel Aufklärungsarbeit, welche fundiert und mit Fakten untermauert versucht die Menschen zu erreichen. Bringt nur leider sehr wenig, wenn sich niemand aufklären lassen möchte.
Ich könnte im Moment täglich laut schreien, wenn ich feststelle wie wenig ein Großteil der Menschen bereit ist, irgendwelche Aussagen einfach mal kritisch zu hinterfragen. Diese wichtige Fähigkeit sollten wir unseren Kindern schon in der Schule gezielt mitgeben. Dann haben wir als Gesellschaft vielleicht eine Chance.

Nun ja, die 'Geschäftemacher' wollen alle Daten von den InternetnutzerInnen und dies nicht zum Schutz. Damit solle noch mehr Profit gemacht werden, da gezielter um Produkte umworben werden sollte. Ungeschütztes Abzocken von BürgerInnen aber ja kein Schutz, nur als dies verkauft.
