Idea: start a mastodon instance that will federate with #MetaThreads for people whose only goal is to engage with threads users to help them leave Meta and welcome them to the fedi. Name: dumbfucks.social
Scrolled a bit through #ThreadsApp just now. The #meta (haha) posting seems to have died down. At this point I’m maintaining the account as a starter list of normies and Brands™ once the service opens up federation.
Okay, so I’m just going to say it. I’m liking Threads. There are a few things it definitely needs but one who uses social media for his brand, like me, cannot deny the fact that Threads is going to be where people are at.
Why Threads will never be a replacement for Twitter?
This is very simple: NSFW/18+ content.
A lot of people have alt accounts on Twitter to check on 18+ accounts, be it sex workers, amateur stuff, 18+ artists, kinky accounts, or just generic adult stuff. Some of those accounts rely heavily on Twitter for self-promotion.
The only alt network that allow such content is the Fediverse, but the lack of users and discovery prevents it for being a viable replacement for people that make a living out of their 18+ content. 😕
Tag your posts about the “Threads” social network with #Threads or #ThreadsApp or #MetaThreads. I don’t want to hear about it and “threads” is way too generic to mute completely. Thanks!
Facebook has tried to compete with Twitter in numerous ways over the years, including copying signature Twitter features such as hashtags and trending topics. But now Facebook’s parent company is taking perhaps its biggest swipe at Twitter yet.
#MetaThreads looks very much alive after being launched less than 24 hours ago. I already see musicians I respect, journalists I follow, and random friends pop up there. Apparently over 5 million signups in the first 4 hours.
What you might not know is that the backend is built with #Python 3.10, using Instagram's #Cinder fork that includes a JIT, lazy-loaded modules, pre-compiled static modules, and a bunch of other interesting tweaks against vanilla Python 3.10.
As it's been revealed that Meta's new social media platform is to be hilariously named 'Threads', here's my 2018 album based on the UK's Cold War civil defence preparations:
For those of you unaware of the link, Threads was a brutally realistic BBC drama from 1984 about a nuclear attack on the UK. It traumatised a generation.
Hello #SFBA!
We've heard and read a lot about the potential upcoming Meta project that intends to join the fediverse. We have also seen many instance admins committing to blocking these instances as soon as they appear. We are not going to commit to suspending them at this time, but we also won't commit to federating with them. As always, we are committed to giving potential problem instances extra attention; and this one will have our eyes fixed upon it.
We do not know when they will release their service, but when they do our moderators will be keeping an eye out for content that violates our CoC or otherwise threatens our users. Just like any server, if they become a nuisance or violate our server rules they will be limited. If there is risk of harm to our users, we will suspend them.
Please continue to report anything you see, and happy tooting!
(OPINION) What if we just wait for Flickr and Tumblr to federated and let them increase Meta's dependency on Federation for content and we could federate them after that
