"The priority should not be to replace every car with its electric equivalent but rather to rethink #mobility in general.
"Placing so much focus on the automobile and even now the electric automobile is not the way that we solve our mobility problems, but rather it's time to invest in #transit, in #cycling, in walkable cities, to get people out of #cars altogether," they said."
The more I learn about Glidance, a system that purports to replace the cane, the more it seems to have taken all the criticisms of "smart canes" into account. It might be the first genuine high-tech navigation aid that could be beneficial, replacing the cane in most circumstances. I'm usually highly skeptical about these things because people just havent thought through the implications including ergonomics, weather conditions, etc
Looking for a tool to compare #GTFS time tables and actual realtime GTFS / PT tracks to analyze #PublicTransport punctuality. Any pointers? Sounds like something that should already exist.
When I first heard about the abominable public transport situation in the US from a teacher in high school who came from New Jersey, I thought she was joking
My home town of 15000 people gets:
5 trains every hour (unless it’s the beginning or end of the workday, then it’s 7)
Bus to and from the closest major city every 15 MINUTES
6 buses/day to each major city around
4 buses/day to the regional capital
1-2 buses/hour servicing EACH small village around
It’s not enough to switch from combustion to electric cars. The amount of metals like aluminium needed is insane, ecological consequences are huge, as this Washington Post report shows (gift link).
A move away from wasteful individual cars is necessary to much improved alternatives is needed, with close to perfect recycling of materials.
Barrière de #StGilles is one of the most infamous places in terms of #mobility in #Brussels. A complete makeover is coming up: #trams will cross the roundabout instead of going around, safer pedestrian crossings, some green, no more traffic lights or cobblestones. Detailed plans are available here: https://openpermits.brussels/fr/_13/PFD/1903271
Besides this project being an affront to actual durable, efficient, green and transformative public transportation, the public safety issues of this system remain largely unresolved in my view - particularly on the evacuation plan in any given stretch of this system, particularly with those with #mobility needs.
If I were a Clark County, #Nevada resident, I would be livid at the hand-waving here.
Bike + train is a winning combination for sustainable #mobility. In #Portugal you can take your bicycle on any train for free, but not all trains are well equipped for it. This map shows the train lines according to their bike friendliness. In my own experience it's possible to take a bike even on 'red' lines, as long as you avoid the crowds. More info here (in Portuguese): https://lisboaparapessoas.pt/2023/08/18/mapa-rede-ferroviaria-nacional-comboios-bicicleta/
Loved this podcast from @TheWarOnCars about the #BikeBus concept. Encouraging independence through #mobility and it has big potential to increase community acceptance of #ActiveTransit.
When I tell people that >20% of the population everywhere cannot drive, they always quibble about including children in that calculation. I think it says a lot about our car brained society that it's normal to think minors shouldn't have independent mobility.
Car dependency in Canada is like private healthcare in the US. 🧵
Best case for both is awesome! Speed, convenience, top of the line service.
But it rarely operates at the best case, does it? The US spends the MOST per capita on healthcare, yet has the worst infant mortality of any high income country, and has low and declining life expectancy.
2/3 of bankruptcies in US are from medical expenses. Ins companies fight to avoid paying claims.
♿ The European #Disability Card: Issued by national authorities, it will complement existing certificates and ensure that disabled people get the treatment they are entitled to.
🚗 The Enhanced European Parking Card: Replacing national parking cards, it will guarantee parking rights in all #EU countries, enabling independent #mobility.
