After being kneecapped by a troll years ago, Location Services, the only somewhat trusted (non-Google/Apple) "Wi-Fi positioning system" (geolocation based on triangulating collected SSIDs), is now shutting down: https://github.com/mozilla/ichnaea/issues/2065

MLS was how could get a meters-accurate location without a receiver / sky line-of-sight.

It was used by many / apps to get instantaneous neighborhood-level location (for maps, local weather…) on laptops.

Mozilla’s now director of public policy once asked me, with a straight face, why I was giving them a hard time and holding Mozilla to a higher standard: “we’re just another Silicon Valley tech company.”

But that’s not what you tell people publicly, is it, Mozilla?

Still, it’s time y’all got this.

Mozilla is a half-billion-dollar for-profit corporation – whose CEO makes >$3M/yr – that has a foundation do its PR.

@kde @kde Guess what, Firefox does the same thing (a refresh will reset your privacy settings and your default browser, all of which affect Mozilla’s revenue streams) but they’re a tad sneakier/cleverer(?) about it.

(Firefox is not private by default so getting you to reset your settings is how they try to influence you to return to their preferred configuration.)

I did not object - I approved of it. I think it validated our logo choice and I am jealous they have a name that can hold :// integrated the way they do.

Not surprised by the new security vulnerability in Mozilla's PDF.js - patched in latest Firefox. But remind me again why browsers try to render PDFs to begin with?

Displaying PDFs in browsers opens a huge new attack surface. PDFs are complex. Browsers render PDF forms poorly and offer only a limited subset of the many accessibility features provided by dedicated PDF software.

I wish none of the browser makers did this.

Mozilla "privacy first" Firefox will send Mozilla anything you type into the search bar, location data, and whether you clicked on a suggestion.

They use this to show you search suggestions, including ads.

This is from 2021

They now want to collect more data on what you click on:
