A comprehensive analysis of 49 silver coins spanning the 7th and 8th centuries CE, revealed the cross-channel connections that shaped early medieval Europe’s economy...
Trove of silver coins dating back to the 1100s discovered on Visingsö, Sweden
Archaeologists from the Jönköping County Museum have uncovered a remarkable treasure trove of 170 silver coins in a grave at Brahe Church on Visingsö, a Swedish island steeped in rich historical significance...
When I looked at Yugoslavia as Y for the #AtoZChallenge, the first coin I liked was the 1955 50 dinara. I love how that series of coins work together. I wrote up the earlier 1931 10 dinara first, to break up the history of the country a bit, so today here is that 1955 #coin: https://coinofnote.com/1955-yugoslavia-50-dinara/
Part 2 of my #AtoZChallenge2024 reflection. I love the personal connection you find with #coins & the community. I wrote most of the posts in the weeks prior to the #AtoZChallenge. This was fortuitous as my mother passed away early in April. But those connections made it a joy to re-read each post & share it. Today's #coin is from day "D", #Denmark, & a park open when my ancesters lived there: https://coinofnote.com/25-ore-token-denmark-dyrehavsbakken/
Apologies for many posts today - I was excited after the #AtoZChallenge :) In any case, I also discovered another server I could log into & search for hashtags like #coins & #Numismatics & see a whole bunch of posts I never saw before. I really wish the Fediverse had a simple way of seeing EVERYTHING posted anywhere on Mastodon with a particular hashtag!
(@FediTips do you know, will me sharing posts help me see future posts from those servers, or do I actually have to follow those accounts?)
@tkinias All true, but it does make hashtags a lot less useful. This is exactly why people stay on Twitter - at least you know if you search the hashtag #Numismatics there (even though you can't follow it like here), you'll see EVERYTHING people post on that hashtag. There has to be a middle ground somewhere...
We're up to "Z" and the last #AtoZChallenge post for 2024! Following a comment suggesting it on an earlier coin (please do leave comments, they are greatly appreciated!) - today we visit #Zanzibar. Home to microliths (what are they?), the Sultan of #Oman (at various times), and the really nice 1 Pysa coin I have for you today: https://coinofnote.com/1882-zanzibar-1-pysa/
As per the boost of @phistorians's post, today is the traditional date celebrated as the founding of Rome by Remus and Romulus, raised by a she-wolf and pictured on this coin issued by Constantine I (the Great) in 333-334 A.D. (Roma on obverse). Minted in Treveri (Germany), if I'd thought of the date when planning this weekend's #AtoZChallenge posts I probably would have written it up for today.
We haven't yet had anyone guess this week's #MysteryCoin, it must be a tricky one! It's a worn, but nicely decorative piece, but from where?
Let us know! And don't forget to subscribe to the Coin of Note Newsletter, as it's due out this week with the answer: https://coinofnote.com/newsletter
Since Sunday is a day of rest and there is no #AtoZChallenge letter for today, let's have a #bonus "R" coin. Again, we are in Ancient #Rome. Actually, more like #Hispania, and a very rough denarius issued by the first Roman Emperor, Augustus. Or is it? Once again, so much history in such a small piece of metal! Find out more here:
For today's "R" coin for the #AtoZChallenge, let's travel to ancient Rome. I picked a piece I find fascinating - not the highest grade piece in my collection, but there is so much history and information in this coin I wanted to share it: https://coinofnote.com/360-a-d-rome-ae-3-fel-temp-reparatio/
The RMS Titanic set sail on its maiden, and only, voyage on April 10, 1912, hitting an iceberg at 23:40 on the 14th and sinking at 2:20 AM on the 15th. 2012 was the centenary of this event so no less than 41 legal tender coins were issue (though none circulating). This is not one of them, alas, but a cheap copy, I assume is intended to be based on the Canadian 50c
For today's #AtoZChallenge, the letter is "i", the country is: India, home to the world's most frequent #rail travellers. Let's explore the #Delhi#Metro, which moves people around the #largest#city in #India and second-largest city in the world:
🪔 #OnThisDay in 47 BC, at the battle of the Nile, 15 years old Ptolemy VIII, trying to escape, drowned after his boat capsized. After his death, Egypt was left to #Cleopatra, and Caesar entered Alexandria. Cleopatra tetradrachm in the post was minted in Ashkelon in 50-49 BC, now in the BM. 📸 me
Medallion of Emperor Caracalla minted in Pergamon and other artifacts found in Bulgaria
The Veliko Tarnovo Regional Museum of History in Bulgaria has unveiled significant discoveries from Roman tombs unearthed near the village of Nova Varbovka in late 2023. The artifacts, including jewelry, coins, and vessels, date back to the early 3rd century CE...
