#AI#GenerativeAI#Open#OpenSource#FLOSS#FreeSoftware#BigTech: "LLaMa-2 is a particularly egregious openwashing example, but there are plenty of other ways that "open" is misleadingly applied to AI: sometimes it means you can see the source code, sometimes that you can see the training data, and sometimes that you can tune a model, all to different degrees, alone and in combination.
But even the most "open" systems can't be independently replicated, due to raw computing requirements. This isn't the fault of the AI industry – the computational intensity is a fact, not a choice – but when the AI industry claims that "open" will "democratize" AI, they are hiding the ball. People who hear these "democratization" claims (especially policymakers) are thinking about entrepreneurial kids in garages, but unless these kids have access to multi-billion-dollar data centers, they can't be "disruptors" who topple tech giants with cool new ideas. At best, they can hope to pay rent to those giants for access to their compute grids, in order to create products and services at the margin that rely on existing products, rather than displacing them.
The "open" story, with its claims of democratization, is an especially important one in the context of regulation. In Europe, where a variety of AI regulations have been proposed, the AI industry has co-opted the open source movement's hard-won narrative battles about the harms of ill-considered regulation."
Open source projects are the unsung heroes of today's digital age. By understanding their importance and ensuring they thrive, we can guarantee a more secure and innovative future for everyone.
Pay your water bill with a click? Jetting off for a getaway? Or finding your way in a bustling city using your phone? There's an unseen force behind every swipe, click, and tap. A force that ensures our digital world remains... #open, #accountable, and #sustainable. Do YOU #PublicCode?

i want to reflect further on how hard is to get messages trough
they wrote it by hand, then sent it to a contact i assume by letter, the i got an instagram message and got the pdf after and transcribed it. the news will be out soon, but i want to reflect on something else related to this
bc i want people to post their own content online in a way, i think people should be able to tell stories how they want to
i was thinking on what the best app may be overall and...
#tumblr is really ok for posting content
but it doesnt allow for #sound uploads :(((( at least, on mobile... but it has rss! and broader size limits than any fediverse instances i know about...
my thing is, why is it so hard to publish multimedia content online?
i know servers cost a lot, and thats why mastodon is so restricted with this.
but why cant we just post any kind of content? like sound, text, pdf archives, video, links and fotos is the basic. most social media allowo only one at a time. its so fristrating. especially trying to do grassroots journalism with activists. its impossible to get them to publish content in any way thats #open, has an rss feed and is readable by other #socials. meaning, everyone is on facebook getting 1 like each. i cant sleep.
like this may seem non poetical but really, we dont solve the technical side then we are stuck forever in empty echo chambers
we need astral rss and federation to be able to even start to compete with major media. its on us to federate everything, no matter the cost. we need to reach people somehow, enter through their phones and get these messages through, and make them forget the tv.
thei're a support group for people who have been jailed and help them get their letters through.
i've syndicated their blog to our own news portal, and its now being re-re-shared on anrachist federation which to me is already a really good situation. an example of how i think rss is really cool
Please respond by saying what sorts of TTRPG things you're pretty likely to either talk about or respond to if you see them.
This can be a list of games (D&D! Tribe 8! Fate!) or categories (the weirdest of indie stuff! NSR! Anything PBtA!), topics (Worldbuilding! Publishing!), stuff you're making, meta-commentary (The State Of The Industry), and so on.
Then maybe share, and if the replies are building up, check them for new people.
#Place has ended... but our project is just beginning! If you don't know us, we're the place #atlas (#placeatlas)! Now, an important part for us requires the help of ANYONE who wants to help.
We're a project to document every piece on the r/place canvas. With a wiki, atlas, and following our motto "We document as it is, not how we want it to be". Our documentation efforts include policing the arguments between edits and contributions.
Who can help?
Anyone! The atlas is fully #open#source, we allow anyone to contribute to it. You can either document it by drawing directly on the website, or by submitting a wiki article on our wiki! #opensource
They might balk - #change is #scary, they're used to Chrome - but Chrome has >90% market share, and that effectively lets #Google do whatever they want, and tell the #open#web to go hang. But tell them #Firefox is faster, uses less memory - especially with an #adblocker.
I'm wondering if you have any #thoughts on the "#Web#Environment#Integrity" proposal by some #Google folks. I wrote a short thread about it, but would be interested in hearing your thoughts before reading it (if you do read it - I'm not demanding it 😀 ).
Fair enough; I didn't see them. I'll go hunting. Thanks.
I'm a #software#engineer of <mumble> years with extensive work in #network/#internet/#web fields - and the proposal alarms me, simply because so many of the things that make the web #open and #useful to people now would, fairly obviously, not be able to earn a "#trusted" designation by any #WEI "#attester" -- at least not one that had any intention of being #accepted/#blessed by #Chrome etc.
Let's get this out of the way: they give a number of #reasons why #webservers "might wish" to establish that a web #client is running on a "#trusted" software stack, including things like "make sure other game players aren't cheating" and "ensure I'm talking to another human".
Just because #attribution is hard, it doesn’t equal ”useless”.
”One group member pointed out that “attribution” for a dataset might result in a 300-million page PDF. “Completely useless. It would compress well, because most of it would be redundant.””
Yeah. Most, but not all, and you can’t know which because you can’t figure our whose #work is going to get #stolen in advance.

But seriously, people who don’t support #open#standards, how are we gonna achieve a #StarTrek future where we can easily have video calls among ships from different planets and races, including #Klingons and #Romulan ships?
Do you think the #Ferengi created a video call app to unite races from all over the Universe and they’ll never take advantage of owning that app?
Would you trust the #Ferengi? Then why you trust the tech bros?
