The fediverse continues its trend of rebuilding popular large platforms, but with #activitypub. This week two projects were announced to be in development:
Loops, a platform for short-form video
Ibis, a federated version of Wikipedia
also a fascinating paper about the hashtag #asstodon, and much more news this week.
Manuel has this great new coat for cold nights like last night. He likes to be warm and stands patiently while I secure all the straps and buckles to put it on him. But for some reason he pulled a Houdini during the night and managed to wriggle out of it. Probably with help from his partner in burro crime. This in 12°F temperatures with high winds and blowing snow 🥶
When I came out to the barn early this morning he asked me sheepishly if I’d put it back on him. And of course I did.
It seems I have neglected my #asstodon duties for far too long… time to make up for it!
Here are a couple of shots of our lovely mule Esmeralda ("Esme") and our no less lovely donkey Corazon Espinado ("Nado" for short) letting off steam in the riding hall.
Both Esme and Nado were rescued from the transport to the slaughterhouse at literally the last second. That was 12 years ago. They've been leading a happy life at the sanctuary ever since.

Ok and this is Arturo. He gives a warning bray at 6:40 am and, if I haven’t emerged from the house by 7:00 sharp, a second blast that shakes the walls of the house, so that I make no mistake that certain equines are on the very verge of death by starvation. #asstodon
Manuel is the one who most often comes over asking to be loved on. 🥰🫏
Sometimes when I’m giving the other donkey a scratch Manuel will saunter over and gently clamp down on my arm with his mouth to get me to stop. “Ahem. You’re loving the wrong donkey!”
Happy birthday Chester. And congrats to Mom Ella. Ella snuck the birth in between our checks of the camera. He is looking healthy and is very curious to explore the world.
The donkeys have been commissioned to build a new museum of modern art by the city of Colorado Springs (which can’t afford Frank Gehry’s fee). Here’s one of their models. #asstodon
Good morning, all. Manuel is our senior donkey. That means he delegates most of the exhausting work of mealtime braying to the junior donkey. I rather like this portrait of him. It’s worth expanding to see the full frame. #asstodon
The neighbor mini donkeys are here this morning. They have a big pasture and can roam all over it but they prefer to come eat right at the fence line just to taunt our animals. Cutest little brats. #asstodon
