What’s an interesting 12-week #Fediverse-related project for computer science undergrads? 🧑🏽🏫
I’m teaching a class for Princeton undergrads in the Fall 🍂 and I want to give them an option to work on a project focused on either building a system, or studying something about how people use the Fediverse.
Wow. Wordpress just announced they have to drop support for Twitter in their Jetpack post sharing plug-in as they haven’t been able to reach agreement with Twitter for access. They are committing to adding support for Mastodon!
The majority of the Web’s individually run websites are Wordpress! It’s ON!!
@mike oooohhhhhh. That reads very similar to the requirements spec in my head for #identity across the #fediverse. The fediverse would be a much more usable, and useful, and diverse, and (in practice) feature-rich, and innovative, and competitive place if everybody implemented something like this! Kudos to you!!
Common sense/medium rare take: treating people like traitors for signing up for Blue Sky will drive folks away from the forms of online community you're advancing. I won't be signing up to #BlueSky because its obviously going to be a milquetoast website — at best Twitter 2, the persistence of an idea beyond its very real & clear death — a literal zombie community that preys on the minds of the living for our lack of ability to imagine, organize and build a true alternative that can appeal to the masses while upholding the principals of #SoftwareFreedom. But lashing out at people for their lack of loyalty to a platform only signals that yours in decay.
#Mastodon is not the end all/be all, as I'm sure most of my mutuals agree. That its had a hard time appealing to folks beyond hacker scenes is both a sign of its weakness and its strength. Its strength is that we have probably the most exciting space of discourse among hackers since #usenet, along with a reasonably generic protocol to build on, #activitypub. But I'm sure we all want it to grow, including a wide range of voices from all walks of life & cultures. So we all have to be thinking about how to work together and try new things in order to grow, and I'm not convinced affirming loyalty to a platform is conducive to that sort of growth.
@mike “Distributed #moderation is why the #fediverse will win..”
Also a weakness. Moderation is an unpaid, underpaid and difficult task that is hard to scale.
What happens if I cancel the redirect on my Mastodon account? Does that mean I can use it again? It says it won't bring back any followers. I'm confused since I've never done this before 😆
My name is JC. I'm a former tech #journalist, having run the phones vertical for Tom's Guide for over two years. I'm still a writer, just not in a public-facing position.
Ha. Today in Facebook's Memories, a blog post I wrote fifteen (15) damn years ago, titled "Spread thin across the internet", where I grumbled about all these walled gardens, each one where I needed a separate identity.
If only there were some sort of #Fediverse that might help with this. 🤔
And yes, I'm quite convinced that at least a solid 30% of the Fediverse will prefer to block me after hearing what I think is the worst, but that's fine, it'll just confirm that I'm right.
I'm playing with @calckey, another #fediverse app. I've created an account & started following people who work on #OpenAccess, #OpenScience, & #ScholComm, just to have some feeds to play with.
If you get a notification that I've followed you from #Calckey, don't assume that I've left #Mastodon. I'm committed to Mastodon and just exploring Calckey.
Speaking of pointless little dances (my last post) its odd but I approve of this one.
I'm no monarchist but do recognize the important role Chuck plays as our eunuch-of-state. The idea of having a politicized president instead of our Governor General gives me shivers. And I like our government being removed from the commander-in-chief, if only on paper.
I'm interviewing somene from the Canadian Monarchist League on Monday. While it's a non-adversarial interview, I do intend to ask about Canadian republicanism. Any questions I should lob his way?
This is on CKMS #CommunityConnections on Radio Waterloo, who aren't in the #Fediverse yet (because I haven't installed the ActivityPub plugin on our server yet)
You can report problematic posts or profiles by clicking their ⋯ button and selecting "Report".
Remember to include links to problematic posts in your report. This saves the moderators a LOT of time, and means the moderation will happen much more quickly and accurately.
If possible, select the option to anonymously tell the account holder's server too. They can shut down the account if necessary. (However, if their server is problematic too, it might be best not to use this option.)
I just tested today that, when I reported recent spammer's comment on my #PeerTube video and the report was hastily approved, that sick comment didn't federate throughout most servers. Email notification was timely, hehe. In other scenario, it would likely still be visible to users of wider #Fediverse, as what I witness with one that I was slower to catch on.
This doesn't really answer the question *, sure clients will have various monetization models (though WTH is transactions). The issue is what is the server/Bluesky PBLLC business model?
Are they going to start putting ads in the feed? Are they going to charge users or clients for access? Stay free and make it up in volume? I have no clue, not sure anyone does either.
Hello everyone! I am brand new to Mastodon. I enjoy film photography (Holga), digital photography, cyanotypes, watercolors, acrylic painting, and much more. I'm also a published author of 500+ books. It's great to virtually meet you! #introduction#introductions
