Right to repair - a new law was finally adopted.

They're talking about the availability of spare parts 10 years after the last model is released.

Too little, too late.

I have appliances which are 20 years old with only minor defects and I can't find spare parts anymore. 20+ years should be a normal period of availability of spare parts IMHO.

For example, my is 21 years old. I've measured its consumption. It is still on par with current fridges (A+). So there is no need to replace it yet. But the door gasket is all cracked and needs a replacement.
And there is none available.
I think its life could be easily extended to 30 years or more.

5 or 10-year lifetime for kitchen appliances is a , don't accept it. Demand more.

Does anyone in know where I can get refrigerant removed safely from a fridge and freezer?

I ask because I need to replace my old ones and would like to use the parts for other things, especially the two compressors.

Since both my laptop and smartphone were stolen, I'm working from the fridge today.

Someone reassure me why I shouldn't expect to find underneath a purchased from a used store... because my irrational brain is running the gamut on that currently.

Gah! Personal damage. It turns out the waterproof box housing my retrofit electronics for an outdoor brew is Indeed waterproof.. and was full of rainwater! (Somebody had the bad idea of putting the cable entry on top... and failed to seal it!). Just burned 3 hours fixing it.

Ha, and yikes! The door fan switch (evaporator fan) on this ends up is 120V AC. Could have used that to power this temperature controller rather than doing a 5V to 12V conversion. However, can't use the controller (directly) to power on/off the evaporator fan, like it is supposed to, because compressor on/off is 5VDC, fan on/off is 120VAC. (ps. this is why you don't touch those wires unless you check 'em first).

controller replacement continues. 5V to 12V DC to DC converter. Adjusted to 12V. Electrical tape on the back, working on a big metal surface, LOL.

Well, that worked! Ran it for a few minutes and instantly down below 70F. Compressor/controller working! Now to figure out the mounting of the controller. It actually fits the old controller hole but extends a few inches out. Thinking I will mount it there anyway and build out a protective housing on the outside with wood. Or mount on top.

Retrofitted . Pulled the signal and power out of the small space where the old controller lived. Routed to waterproof box on the side, where the new controller and power converter are stashed. Too small to see the display, so that requires flipping it open and pulling it out. May change that later if it bugs me too much. Double stick foam tape and aluminum tape holding it there for now, until I determine where the tubing is routed.
