Anybody knows where to get good Internet traffic statistics these days? I'm interested in the protocol mix seen in the backbone, not absolute numbers.

What percentage of the traffi is , , , , , , , , … these days?

had some traces, but the latest I know are from 2012, which is not helpful.

In principle, I support the use of for / authentication; I just wish it didn't make it so much harder to use my preferred mail clients for corporate accounts because each client's OAuth2 app key needs to be approved by the sysadmin.

Currently cranky that I can't use Mutt with a couple of O365 accounts, and wondering if I can do something sneaky like rip OAuth2 keys out of Thunderbird or something.

Hey friends. Recommend me a simple, competent, email client for Windows that supports multiple IMAP accounts.

TBH I was happy with Windows Mail but New Outlook wants to store all my non-MS emails in the MS-Cloud and I'm not having that.

I used to use @thunderbird way back - is that safe from the AI craze?

I installed the latest version of today after a long time, and it's really great. However, I personally miss important features like a 'from-full-address' column or the implementation of the ManageSieve protocol.

Kudos @thunderbird

Accessing Mastodon and the fediverse via email:

An experimental #IMAP and #SMTP interface.
I feel like #NNTP #Usenet interface would be more appropriate.
But gotta start somewhere!
Threading and replies work ok too (so far!).

I've been doing more research on email servers and email hosting.

It would be great to talk with a Sys Admin who handles email for multiple domains and clients.

I am working with a company who has been doing web design and hosting for their web design clients since the '90s.

They hosted their email starting way back when and have been using the same email server pretty much ever since. It needs to be replaced soon.

The question is what to replace it with.

Host our own? And all the complications that come with that.

Manage the email but host somewhere else with a company that specializes in email? Such as MXroute:

https://mxroute.com

Host our own email IMAP accounts, but use a separate service for sending mail so we don't have to worry about deliver-ability?

Let me know if you have experience with a similar situation.

I've successfully set up Mox by Mechiel Lukkien as my new mail server. It handles SMTP, IMAP, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. It has a built-in spam filter, a web interface, webmail, autoconfiguration and it can show a checklist whether your DNS is set up correctly or not. All in a single binary! Pretty cool stuff. I'm planning to test various other solutions and document it on my blog soon.

I will now compare various self-hosting solutions for email and then summarise my findings in part 3, stay tuned!

Otherwise, on the server side, @fastmail's may help, from what I had gathered in this comment: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/411#note_1590151

@davidrevoy so let me get this straight: @protonmail fucks with customers' eMails?
That's a huge no-go IMHO because that's just inexcuseable!

Not that I'd consider at all but it's just a big red flag to me even if I were to use them, because if a provider is & they should be better than any generic "" that doesn't.
Because that makes it useless for a lot of my tech stack: What's the point of an eMail provider if I can't use it with a server?

kkarhan,
@kkarhan@mstdn.social avatar

@monsieuricon @davidrevoy +9001%
To me @protonmail messing with customers' eMails in any shape or form is an absolute no-go!

Espechally given that they literally & "to protect from ".

The only legitimate reason they should ever do anything like it is if they - as bona-fide provider - get actually forced by a swiss judge to do so.

Otherwise it's only harmful to users of actual like PGP/MIME.

It basically makes it impossible to use!
