Cape Breton is so, so beautiful! Next level amazing. I don't think I've seen a National Park this scenic since we were out west two years ago. We went on a 4.7 mile hike today and we're rewarded with some cool views, but the drive itself was simply stunning.

view of Death Valley National Park. Just realized you fan use the thermal satellite sensors to determine where is likely to be the hottest part of the park, based on thermal signature from other days. (ie if you REALLY want to experience 131F, probably localized microcclimate)

Death Valley National Park may get over six inches of rain in the next couple of days. They are closing the park. This is crazy weather. You don't want to be in the park during this storm.

Once a forest... just some 200 millions years ago...

Chunks of petrified wood lay strewn among the bentonite mud hills of the Painted Desert, in the Blue Mesa area of Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona; September 2018.

We recently visited the in . I practised pronouncing & is actually quite easy and roles off the back of the throat without a problem for an Urdu speaker. There was lots of walking to be done and on the morning of the first day, we went to the at . The return trip was about 10.5 km long. It was a nice way to whet the appetite for hiking in this picturesque part of the country.

Interesting (but sad) death, Death Valley National Park; man found dead, air conditioning in his vehicle was not functional. In this kind of heat, you likely want to travel in pairs or in a convoy so if you have a breakdown or vehicle issue, you do not perish of heat illness. https://www.nps.gov/deva/learn/news/fatality-7-3-2023.htm

Free National Park entrance day. Hint: if you're going to Death Valley, take extra water and travel with more than one vehicle. Not record-breaking, but really... 114F

The New River is the second oldest river on the planet. I’ve only recently come to understand the real significance of the Appalachians. I was born and raised in and around these mountains, and they were always just — you know — mountains.

They reach back something like 350 million years. Predating dinosaurs? Really?

Gotta love it when architecture lies to you!

A cute little wooden shed? Nope! It's concrete designed to look like anything but concrete.

The walls are a single slab, but textured to look like wood plank. The roof is cast to reflect shingles (WHY?!?). Ultimately, all is revealed by the damage to the roof, which pulls back the curtain on the fraud.

It neither stands out nor fits in. Why why why can't this poor building just be what it is?

A detail of the shed's door, showing the fake wood texture of the sides, the fake shingles of the roof and the damage to the concrete the reveals the lie in the materials.

Omg. My bed. I'm back in my bed. It's a crappy camper mattress, but dammit, it's my bed! We're starting our 3 day drive back to Vermont tomorrow. So tonight, I'm not doin' anything but playing video games while laying on this hard, hard mattress of mine.

We took some photos of the stunning Gros Morne national park and will post a blog post when we're stateside again.

“The Snows of Kilimanjaro”

Amboseli National Park is a national park in Kenya that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. It has great views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

Almost 85 percent of the ice cover on Kilimanjaro disappeared between October 1912 and June 2011. At the current rate, most of the ice on Kilimanjaro will disappear by 2040. 😢

“The Snows of Kilimanjaro” is a short story by Ernest Hemingway.

“Empty”

There is a strong contrast in Amboseli National Park, in Kenya, between swamps filled with animals and desert zones like this one.
