A Smooth Newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) standing out against a background of submerged sacking in a pathside pond.
Cliffs of Moher, County Clare, Ireland.
"Creature railed against by ex-prime minister could thwart planning application for #Oxfordshire home...
"...As such, an unlimited fine and up to six months in prison could await anyone found guilty of disturbing the newt’s resting places and breeding sites, or taking their eggs..."
Starts out with gills living in the water. Then metamorphoses into these cute little guys who run around in the leaf litter eating slugs and insects. Then after several years and possibly miles away from their natal pond, they morph again into adults who may never leave the water again!
Saw some “red eft” in #NewHampshire today! Apparently they are the juvenile state of the Eastern Newt.
They are very cute and were fine with close-up photography… but produce tetrodotoxin!! #RedEft#Newt
