Wow! Just, wow!

Matt is too much for the man who brought incivility to Congress.

Matt is your spirit child, . You should be proud!

My friend Mixo and his newt character conducting a forest orchestra a some fictional NES game.

Working within the limitations of NES hardware was challenging and fun. Have to put thought into palettes and using them effectively.

Ah, Triturus cristatus. Doing righteous work. No wonder they're a protected species.

" threaten ’s plan to build swimming pool

"Creature railed against by ex-prime minister could thwart planning application for home...

"...As such, an unlimited fine and up to six months in prison could await anyone found guilty of disturbing the newt’s resting places and breeding sites, or taking their eggs..."

Red Eft (Spotted Orange Newt) in upstate

Starts out with gills living in the water. Then metamorphoses into these cute little guys who run around in the leaf litter eating slugs and insects. Then after several years and possibly miles away from their natal pond, they morph again into adults who may never leave the water again!

I was going through some ancient stuff and found this thing that still makes me chuckle.

went wandering again today, and made a few new(t) friends… 😶
(The third was one of the tiniest I’ve ever seen 🥰)

The good news: got out for a ride with the kid!
The bad news: “I'm not sure I like biking any more.” 😭😱

We did find an interesting blob of jelly in a recently dried water puddle. If you look close at the second one there's inhabitants!

side view of the jelly, something(s) little inside are looking out

Saw some “red eft” in today! Apparently they are the juvenile state of the Eastern Newt.
They are very cute and were fine with close-up photography… but produce tetrodotoxin!!

A 2nd of these red eft, seen from the top, immobile on some dried brown leaves
A closer photo of a 3 red eft where you can see details on its orange skin: some stripes and some round dots.

Great Crested Newts and Palmate Newts this week in . Lots of both species in my local pond. Great Crested Newts are a protected species in the UK and Europe - I have a licence to survey for them.

A male Great Crested Newt - a large amphibian, resembling a lizard. The newt has dark skin and is on bare ground, crawling towards the camera.
