What Happened to Separation of Concerns in Frontend Development:

On a story that began around 2010, when it appears that web made separation of concerns () easier—and made it harder.

If you're in the US and your phone starts squawking loudly this afternoon, don't worry, it's only a test.

https://www.fema.gov/emergency-managers/practitioners/integrated-public-alert-warning-system/national-test-2023

If you have an important meeting or video call going on at 2:20pm ET today, you might want to turn off the emergency alerts, or just leave your phone in another room.

On an iPhone, this setting is under notifications, but you have to scroll all the way down to the bottom, after all the individual apps.

Here's something I hadn't considered previously:

Edit: I'm being told by way smarter people that even turning these notification settings off probably won't stop this test on your phone. But turning it off will.

kkarhan,

@Aphrodite @briankrebs I know.

Germamy does test about annually since a lot of people had to die not-so-long-ago to make decisionmakers realize that and as per are good , & and that there is no valid excuse to not use them to people!

Granted I really mean shut down in the sense of "only removing the battery makes them less useable"...

If open data and code support reproducibility (and they do), then so do standardized data and code 𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. But what are the best ways to implement them?

Centralization, Decentralization, and Internet Standards

This document discusses aspects of centralization that relate to Internet standards efforts. It argues that while standards bodies have little ability to prevent many forms of centralization, they can still make contributions that improve the Internet.

Everytime I deal with tires sizes other than ISO *-622 (aka "700c") I get confused & have to relearn everything about 😤️

Mom's has 40-559 aka MTB aka 26x1.5" tires that need replacement, but only has:

  • 35-590 ("650x35 A")
  • 35-584 ("650x35 B")
  • 25-571 ("650x25")
I'm now wondering, "Can I put 584 tires on a rim that currently has 559 tires? Is a 2.5cm difference in wheel diameter insignificant?" 🤔️ (my Internet searches led me nowhere on that question)

Biden Administration plans water heater standards, says they will save consumers $11 billion

The U.S. Department of Energy on Friday proposed on it said would save consumers $11.4 billion on energy and water bills annually.

The standards on residential water heater efficiency, which are required by Congress, have not been updated in 13 years.
