Best bit of advice I received from a friend:
"If you qualify for a benefit, it was designed for you. Use it."

I've been paying $0 for my lifesaving medication for the past decade+ thanks to co-pay assistance from the manufacturer and my state (PA) really helped me out with unemployment during the pandemic. Grateful for both. And the experiences make me happy to pay taxes to support others who need those services.

Government can be amazing!

  • She learned that millions of Black people haven't been "making it all up" about police mistreatment
  • She learned why US Black folk almost never call the police, for any reason
  • Her son learned that his own mom is not safe. Her lack of understanding of US racism makes her dangerous
  • She's probably going to learn that this does not meet the definition of police misconduct

The most paradigm-shifting idea I was introduced to in 2023 was (to paraphrase):

History isn't the study of the past, it's the study of why the world is the way it is today.

And it makes me want to read more history in 2024. Geologic history. Natural History. Prehistoric history. Cultural history...

I don't know who to attribute this thought to, but it's too good not to share. If anyone knows who said this, please reply and I'll edit this post to add attribution.

Happy New Year from Philly!

Our weird New Year's day custom is the Mummers' Parade. Groups of people from all walks of life and from around the region wake up at 5am, dress up in ridiculous outfits, and strut up Broad Street while a live band of weird instruments (tubas, banjos, glockenspiels, etc.) accompany them.

This image is from the winning String Band team last year (there are 5 divisions, with the String Bands and the Fancy Brigades being the two with the best production values).

Suppose you had to produce a local computer from scratch, completely independent from existing manufacturers like Intel. (If you need a specific location for this hypothetical, let's say Greater Philadelphia.) No chip fabs in China, Taiwan etc. The tech level and computing power doesn't matter, you can tailor the application to the power of the computer; indie local production is top priority.

What is the best approach? A simple conventional silicon chip? Vacuum tubes? Analog? Mechanical?

I found a DOZEN different mosses on my capstone site in the mountains of northern NJ yesterday! Here are a few of my favorites.

Starbursts of Common Hairmoss (Polytrichum commune)
Almost metallic-golden, shimmery pillows of Broom Forkmoss (Dicranum scoparium)
Layers of multicolored moss on an erratic boulder moved to my site by a glacier 800,000 years ago (3 glaciers ago). Can anyone identify the light, fluffy one on top of the other?

Any speakers of Lenape out there who can translate the word "Wawayanda"? It's a name associated with a region near north NJ / southern NY.

It's generally understood by laypeople (white folk) in the northeast that "wawa" means "wild goose", but not sure if that's truly accurate (doesn't show up in the Lenape Nation's official online dictionary) or what the second half of the word might mean.

I'm not asking you to change careers, but to simply:

Everything that ends up in the water that leaves your property (eroded dirt, pesticides, fertilizers, heat - all of which can harm tiny stream creatures, harm the fish that eat them, harm the birds and mammals that eat the fish, and harm us when drinking or showering) winds up in someone's water source.

And everything that your neighbors do upstream (sometimes hundreds of miles upstream) wind up in yours.

We're all connected within watersheds.

Build a fuc*ing Terminal already, . With heat and a/c, restrooms, affordable food options, and comfortable seating. Treat people using bus like the human beings they are.

Require all intercity bus companies to use the facility and to pay the city docking fees to cover operating and maintenance costs. This isn't rocket science. It's basic civil service that our grandparents figured out how to accomplish in the era of pencils and paper.

Great Lessons I've Learned, Part 46:

When I was studying theater in my mid-20s, my scene partner and I were disagreeing on our characters - we were traveling singing minstrels (Shakespeare) and I thought our characters were bad singers who sang anyway because people would pay us to stop singing. My scene partner thought our characters were good singers who found their life's calling.

We couldn't come to an agreement so went to our director and explained our motivational conflict.
