@stefan I now and then DM my colleague Instance owners about a spam issue. I do it when I see the spam predates the owner's latest activity as well as when it looks like the owner has abandoned the server. The latter is an extra check before I defederate their instance. The issue with open abandoned instances is increasing it seems.

Some of our Mastodon users are receiving spam today. I'm doing analyzes while suspending the reported accounts. Of course, this spam is coming from instances allowing users to create free accounts and without an approval process. It's just the way it is. If the instance is insignificant we defederate from the instance.

As suspected. The spam is coming from instances where their irresponsible owner/admin isn't an active user anymore. Basically abandoned instances, that just let their door wide open for free registrations without approval. Some of the owners are being contacted when no response within the next 48 hours I will defederate the instances in question.

If you don’t want advertisements in your physical mailbox in Sweden, all you have to do is put a sticker or sign on it saying “No ads, please”. People carrying mail are obliged to respect that. As simple as that.

Across about ten things this week, I'll say this: mastodon has a real toxic reply guy culture going on and it is exhausting to receive this EVERY SINGLE TIME you dare say something that gets attention, as a marginalized female scientist. Worse to me tbh than typical trolling because it is so deeply rooted in credibility deficit "know your place" patterns. You all are worse than birdsite for me, where I have nearly five times more followers. Definitely thinking about leaving.

Fix your hearts.

@grimalkina Having years of experience with setting up community websites for clients, I can tell you that people's behavior online is for the most part far from civilized. The first thing we did after going live with our instance was using days, blocking lots of individual accounts on other instances. In some cases blocking whole instances. We also tell our users that they can expect having to mute and block a lot of accounts themselves in the start in order to end up with a usable social feed.

@grimalkina And the following is going to make some people angry, but move to a smaller instance or an instance that is for people sharing similar interests. You'll be able to share some posts for viewing on that instance only so people across the fediverse that would react toxic have less chance demonstrating their lack of social skills. Smaller instances are easier to maintain and if handpicked by you, more friendly.

My number one tip for people is to boost more!

Discovery sucks on Mastodon, which is partially by design, but it also means it’s hard to find new and interesting people here. If you see something cool, reach for that boost button as well!

@matt Then tip number 2 should be for people to mute more (which some might do now with me). Boosts are good for discovery. But one also discovers a lot of people that aren't your cup of tea. Keep them out of your feed by muting them.
