It's Friday! YAY!

It's getting increasingly difficult to fit all the dancers on to the screen & make loops that fit with ALL THE OTHER LOOPS (it totally stuffed the timing for this one) so next week will be the last, when I hit a year (!)

I like having a Friday Thing though, so will do #FridaySparklyDanceParty any week there are volunteers, & probably just random dancers on other weeks.

As ever, have a great weekend if you possibly can 😃

#FridaySparklyDancers #sillyScribbles #animation

Hand drawn animation loop. There are 51 simple figures each doing their own dance move. The main body of the screen is an orange starburst sky, with a rainbow framing the top. 48 dancers are on the lines of the rainbow, doing their thing. The new dancer for this week is larger, and centre stage on a cloud at the bottom, with a dancer either side for company.

Re: the last boost

Is someone working on a global low/no-covid specific dating app?

Because if god willing there is ever a world where it's safe for me to leave the house again, I would really like to meet people who are:

  • systems thinkers
  • in solidarity with those who have less economic power
  • fighting eugenics and ableism
  • able to resist peer pressure
  • resolved in their convictions
  • thinking for the long term

Truly, I can think of nothing sexier and I mean that with my whole heart.

@AdaraAstin

There IS https://covidmeetups.com. It is NOT a dating app, just a place for Covid-conscious individuals to potentially meet up as acquaintances/friends, arrange playdates for their children with like-minded families, etc.

But it's a start! 😃

We're the best!!! Grammar Girl just made the Writer's Digest list of 101 Best Websites for Writers! 🎉🎉🎉

We've been on the list before for the website, but this year is special because it's the first time we're on the list for the PODCAST. (Yes, the list of websites has a category for podcasts and YouTube channels.)

It means so much to me to know that people love and appreciate the show. Thank you to Writer's Digest and to all the people who listen! 1/2

As part of the Covid memorial I am creating, my poem will be translated into seven languages. One of those is Urdu.

memory, stronger than stone

قوتِ سنگ سے جو قوی ہے یاد

Urdu was the language of my grandfather & I know there will be something profoundly affecting about seeing it carved into stone.

My family faced unimaginable racism, it tore us apart, and I can't quite put into words how much it will mean to see Urdu as an enduring part of Scotland's landscapes.

I get to place that stone.

My soul is weary. TV-wise I have found myself down a rabbit hole of kindness - bender watching: dog rescue shows, Queen's Gambit, Queer Eye, even the Mister Rogers movie (which has a rather loving exploration of some dark feelings). I desperately need to see people finding paths through their difficulties, and the surprises of kindness that accelerate that.

Whatcha all watching to fill you up, give you a bit o hope for humanity?

@lonelinesscorps

Her_Doing,
@Her_Doing@wandering.shop avatar

@vlrny

*** Doctor Who. ALL about trying to make the universe better somehow, whether a single child or an entire galaxy. All about celebrating kindness & diversity in all its forms. Funny. Sometimes heartbreaking but for all the right reasons.

The Aaron Sorkin series, especially West Wing, but also News Room, Studio 60, & Sports Night - every one about good decent people trying to do their best in an often difficult world.

Probably more, but those off the top of my head. 💛

  • I've got to do something about the Friday dancers. Adding one a week is chaos. There's either a mass of overlapping flailing limbs or the dancers are TINY.

  • Ah. Shame. You going to archive the first thirty away & start a new one?

  • [...]

  • I said, are you going to...

  • Yeah, yeah, we've been here before, I know what you said.

Umm, yes, you're correct, but personally I wouldn't mind. 😊

Even if you don't want to go back to add a hashtag (I understand that), at least create one right now and add it to the above post to make it easier for people to find the first thirty-one!!

(It would be nice to be able to easily find the special ones.)

Otherwise, in another 31 Fridays, you'll be having this discussion again and hating yourself. 😄

Ok, I need some advice.
My daughter won't allow pictures to be taken of her - and this is her right.

However, it turns out that while it IS a privacy issue for her, it isn't about the pictures per se, it's that she doesn't want pictures taken with a phone. Good old normal non-networked digital cameras would be fine, she just doesn't want Google or Apple consuming her likeness.

Any recommendations for affordable decent digital cameras? I haven't owned one in almost a decade...

Her_Doing,
@Her_Doing@wandering.shop avatar

@grrrr_shark

I like the Nikon Z50 & you might also be able to purchase it with two kit lenses (one "pancake" portrait & one zoom). They are all (relatively) very light (an issue for me), definitely well decent, and I like mine a LOT.

The model is a year or two old now, so while it was a good price even when it first came out, it should be even better now.

I think it's great in a wide range of situations, including and maybe especially low light.

Love mine. Nothing else tempts me at all.

I just had my first ever Be My Eyes call this morning.

What a feel-good way to start the day, helping someone who is visually impaired (to book a flight, in this case)! I feel as if I made a friend.

I have had the app for years but missed calls in the early days (didn't recognize the ring tone) , then changed phones and forgot to get signed in on it. So I'm up and running again now.

I once had a call from someone getting ready for a first date and wanted to be sure she looked okay.

She looked beautiful and I told her that her date was a very lucky fellow - not just because of how she looked, but because of how much thought and effort she was putting in.

I often wondered how it went... 🥰 🙏

Happy 42nd Anniversary to Us!

t's hard to believe that this young couple is us, 42 years ago today. There's been a lot of water under all kinds of bridges since then, but we have sailed, paddled, rowed, poled and occasionally motored along them together all the way. Yes, we've had to use buckets to bail at times, but we always managed to stay afloat because we had each other. Thanks for all these wonderful years, @stevenkennard

Talking to my cousin who I've only recently regained contact with, for the first time since we were little (40+ years ago). She's married with two little kids, healthy and active. There's something about the holidays that really highlights how much my life has diverged from "normal."

I haven't celebrated Xmas in ages, because this time of year holds too much baggage for me. In the space of a few years, in the time between Thanksgiving and Xmas, I lost both sets of grandparents, my younger brother and my first two LTR. My spouse isn't a fan either and generally chooses to work Xmas day, so it's become a very quiet, contemplative time rather than a busy and joyous time.

I just don't feel like the holidays are very neurospicy-friendly. Lights and bells and smells and socializing and so much overstimulation. I don't miss going into the new year feeling burnt out and raw from so many obligations.

This isn't something I can really talk about with most folks who'd ask me if I have any holiday plans. "No" as an answer goes over about as well as a fart in a spacesuit. I don't know if I'll ever come up with a good answer to that question.

Her_Doing,
@Her_Doing@wandering.shop avatar

@Cetraria

It's not exactly your situation, but I do know a number of people who reply (without apology or embarrassment) some variation of "We have a quiet, immediate-family+only day. It's such a busy time of year and we keep that day (or Christmas Eve through Boxing Day, or whatever) just for ourselves." Or "I keep it for myself to splurge on Chinese takeaway and Christmas movies". Or whatever might apply.

You might be a lot more 'normal' than you think. 😊
