FYI: "Toe the line"

The idiom is toe the line, not tow the line.

The phrase derives from track-and-field events in which athletes are required to place a foot on a starting line and wait for the signal to go. Race officials used to shout “Toe the line!” where now they shout “On your marks!”

Since entering the language, the idiom has developed to mean do what is expected or act according to someone else’s rules or expectations.

So far, from the last 24 hours:

  • a Conservative candidate endorses her Reform UK rival, and then steps down immediately, forcing the Conservative party to replace her in a scramble
  • One Conservative MP declines to return back to the UK to start campaigning
  • a senior cabinet minister disowns the National Service plan and decides to go on holiday himself
  • Central Conservative HQ accidentally sends an email to all candidates to blame them all for the poor start to the election campaign
  • It was accidentally leaked from the SAME EMAIL that the Conservative party has not got enough cash to spend on it’s target seats
  • It turns out that at the beginning of last week, CCHQ told workers, staffers, and MPs that they can book time off, before being taken by surprise by Sunak’s calling the election, therefore there are multiple staffers who just aren’t in the country right now
  • The Conservatives have fielded no candidates in ~150 of the ~600 seats in England, Scotland, and Wales and have only until the end of the week to submit them to the Electoral Commission. This means that there is a risk that there will be entire portions of the country without a Conservative candidate because the party didn’t file the correct paperwork in time

And this is just the last 24 hours, alone.

Revealing the direction of Tory policy, while (finally) Rishi Sunak has explicitly recognised the tax-raising impact of fiscal drag (the freezing of personal tax allowances, while prices & wages rise)... he only proposes unfreezing the personal allowance for pensioners.

Its a pity (if unsurprising) that he has not previously 'recognised' the impact of fiscal drag on the rest of the population... or more accurately its all too clear that until now he was happy to raise taxes on workers.

Can you help Cats Protection in Orkney with its vital feral cat neutering work?

Cats Protection’s Caithness branch needs to recruit a team of Trap-Neuter-Return Volunteers to oversee its vital work in controlling feral colonies of cats throughout Orkney. The branch, which is run entirely by volunteers, needs people who can spare a few hours a month to help prevent colonies of feral cats breeding out of control.

This means she will have insufficient time to announce her intention to run as an independent candidate.

Zoe Williams (Guardian) thinks Rishi Sunak might actually be trying to lose the election & that sort of makes sense;

The Tories have so wrecked the country that their best bet is to walk away, leave Labour the almost impossible task of clearing up the mess & then in five years time (with the collusion of a supine right wing press) claim Labour have had their chance & the Tories can now save us from the wreckage (without acknowledging its Tory policies that did it)!

More shipping news:

Unsurprisingly, given the problems for merchant shipping at the southern end of the Suez Canal, more ships are passing round the Cape of Good Hope... leading to longer journeys & container transfers at the west of the Mediterranean for shipment going to Italy, Greece etc.

Both add costs to shipments & as noted in a post yesterday, this will be another external driver of continued inflation.

The BoE will, of course, blame workers (again)!

#inflation #supplychain #shipping.

The question has to be, "are the values held by Tories valuable for society? "

@TheSwiv

Tories appear (once they gain a position in government) to value greed, dishonesty, corruption & cruelty.

Those are not the UK values I was brought up to value & respect.

We used to be, in the main, a tolerant and compassionate country. But the Tories have done their best to destroy that.
We are poorer in every sense for their 'contriibution' & I will be very glad to see them gone.
