Society: You must cover your genitals at all times but wear clothes that represent your genitals because while you’re not supposed to think about other people’s genitals I get very uncomfortable when I can’t tell what genitals other people have.

Genitals.

Money is like shit. If we spread it around, it functions as fertilizer, enabling incredible ideas to sprout and grow. If instead we just pile it up into mountains, it stinks and all the great stuff that could sprout and flourish is starved of nutrients.

Universal basic income is the good shit.

If a baker may not be forced to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding on the basis of religious freedom, surely a woman can’t be forced to give birth.

Brilliant proposal by German politicians: Let us place air defence systems inside NATO, and have these systems save civilian lives by shooting down missiles over western Ukraine.

This is pretty clever because

  1. Russia cannot bomb these systems as that would be an act of war against the entire NATO alliance.

  2. The systems cannot trigger a war with Russia themselves, as they are not attacking Russia.

Do it!

So the Migrant Advisory Committee, after a 14 week investigation has found 'no evidence' of any deliberate abuse of the international student visa scheme;

they're coming here to study.

As the FT delicately puts it:

this has 'placed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a bind, forcing him to either confront those on the Conservative right who want it scrapped, or ignore the advisory group'!

Watch this space.... which way he jumps will tell us a lot about the future of the (rump of) the Tory party

When the UK’s deputy foreign secretary has to admit that around 40% of all money laundered globally likely flows through London & the Crown Dependencies, you can bet that such an estimate will be on the low side.

There are many reasons that the UK's global reputation is increasingly tarnished & the work in financial services to hide & process criminal/illegal funds is contributing to that malaise.

So much for the value of financial services to the UK

Sunak’s great plan for the UK is to turn it into a research and innovation powerhouse by deterring foreign students from coming to the universities whose ability to research and innovate depends on their fee income.

Tory plans to deny access to foreign students wanting to study in the UK are already causing massive harm to UK universities and the economy of the country https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/05/14/tory-plans-to-deny-access-to-foreign-students-wanting-to-study-in-the-uk-are-already-causing-massive-harm-to-uk-universities-and-the-economy-of-the-country/ Overseas applications to UK universities are tumbling as a result of new visa rules that appear to be motivated by racism. The knock on effects are going to be considerable, for the country, for students and even the viability of many universities who have come to reply on this income.

Pioneering geologist & oceanographer Marie Tharp changed our understanding of the ocean.

When Tharp sought a geology job at Columbia in 1948, women couldn’t go on research ships. So she was hired to assist male grad students.

Back then, many scientists still assumed the bottom of the ocean was featureless. Tharp figured out how to use data to create sketches of the ocean floor. Her hand-drawn maps helped develop plate tectonic theory. https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/news/marie-tharp

It still tickles me that the TERFS and Transphobes tried to claim Terry Pratchett as their own, and everyone who actually knew him, including his daughter, and co-author Neil Gaiman, was like WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, you couldn't be further from the truth.

Hmmm... so the Q. is how long will Keir Starmer continue to hold Natalie Elphicke close?

She's been accused of excusing her husband who was found guilty of rape, of joining three others is attempting to influence his trial & now also (more recently) of trying to blame deaths on striking firemen.... and that's before we get on to her voting record...

Many are wondering how she could have a home in the Labour Party.... so we have to ask: what does Labour get our of her continued proximity?

"The Rwandan genocide is 1 of 2 events in the 1990s that prodded a guilt-ridden world to pledge never again to stand aside & allow mass atrocities. The other was the massacre by Bosnian Serbs of thousands of Muslim men & boys in Srebrenica the following year. In 2005 the UN General Assembly adopted the principle that all countries have a “responsibility to protect” (R2P) people from genocide and war crimes, by force if necessary."
