Leading causes of death in the US. remains #4 in 2022, but I don't think that's the whole story. Notice the increase in accidents? COVID is known to damage brains. Or the increase in heart disease and strokes? COVID also harms hearts and blood vessels. No significant increase in cancer, yet, but we may week learn COVID is oncogenic in the years to come. Our goal in 2023 and beyond must be to get infected as infrequently as possible, not invite many infections per year.

    I’ve been pointing out the ramifications of the anti-ads movement masquerading as a privacy movement will harm news & social apps as they struggle to find new forms of revenue.

    That said, even my most pessimistic expectations didn’t predict how much this would screw up apps like Reddit and Twitter.

    Fascinating to watch the Twitter "exodus" that began back in November. Many left in high dudgeon to create a presence here or elsewhere, vowing never to return.

    Then slowly, they returned.

    Some missed their friends, but also:

    It's much harder here to have rapid-fire outrage.

    It's harder here to get 100's or 1000's to see your wit, or to follow you.

    Not throwing shade - people have different needs re: social media and that's OK.

    A social experiment in real time.

    In the era of rotary phones, some businesses (and others) would put simple locks on the dial to prevent them from being rotated far enough to actually dial calls. However, a "practiced" caller could effectively "dial" calls by tapping the hook switch (aka switch hook) with the proper timing to emulate the dial. This was a common "phone phreak" skill. Or, uh, so I'm told.

    I had an acquaintance in LA who had a vintage rotary phone in her vintage car (1985?)
    and that was so cool.
    There used to be a person here in Minnesota with a huge phone collection. Sought after as movie props, but now 3d printing and cgi is probably replacing that.

    I wonder: is there a relationship between being an “isolated species taxonomicaly” extinction risk, global spread, number of individuals and/or sheer biomass? That is: are species whose nearest common ancestor with other species is further in the past in greater danger of extinction?

    Ideally one would also look at isolated species clusters; compare the gap between near relatives and far.
