If I had created the meme myself I might have chosen a different country as an example. In any case, I wouldn't have used one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. It just wouldn't hit right.

You're misapprehending what is funny about the meme. It's not about Norway. It is about how Americans understand and view socialism.

I’m still stuck on the fact that “I shot and killed a puppy simply because I didn’t like it” is HER side of the story.

Pappy,
@Pappy@thepit.social avatar

@mattblaze A chicken killing dog that's aggressive with you is a problem. I think, taking it out back and shooting it is probably a bit much. Most normal people would just pass it on to someone as a pet (obviously I don't believe her when she says the dog was aggressive. Maybe to her, who knows.) Including it as an anecdote about who you are as a person is even stranger. She knows her audience though. Conservatives in general and the MAGA crowd in particular will love this.

If you have not read either of these books, then you really should.

Regardless of whether you like Non fic or not, if you are using this here big old interwebs, then honestly read them both. Start with Doppelganger and then read Code Dependant.

Is technology gonna destroy democracy? What about the whole of humanity?

These books made me worry, but both also gave hope for the future and the power of humanity and most of all communities.

Rich white people stealing from even richer white people is definitely a serious crime in the US, so you may be right. The numbers the prosecution is throwing around are cartoonish though. Quintillions of dollars? Get out of here! How much real money did he steal?

Every time I see "Liquid Death" water I feel personally insulted.

I read every can to say "Yes, you humans, especially male humans, really are stupid enough that, even though drinkable water comes out of the faucet, we can sell a ton of expensive water in a can just by giving it an idiotic name."

Technically aluminium is infinitely recyclable. Also, they sell flavored water. It's not all just regular water. I quite like it and I think it was pretty clever to market it like malt liquor, lol

Hi everyone! I am searching for a native English speaker (American) with a background in (digital) archaeology that can check an academic article I wrote and want to submit. My English is not that bad, but it isn't perfect either.
I can't pay money, but I have a couple of books (not new, but also not used) that I could send free of charge to whoever likes to help. We can also discuss the books first, before you decide!

Let me know!
Best!

Replaced the door seal on my 1999 Toyota 4Runner: In terms of difficulty, give it a 1 out of 10 (simple). Remove 4 screws, snap out plastic panels in the way, pull old seal, replace with aftermarket replacement seal, snap panels back in, screw the screws back in.

Pappy,
@Pappy@thepit.social avatar

@ai6yr Where'd you get the door seal? I've been looking for a good aftermarket seal for my driver side door.

Pappy,
@Pappy@thepit.social avatar

@ai6yr Right!? I have a '96. The driver's side door rubber is just shredded. I priced it at the dealer and it's like $200. I may try an aftermarket one though. I've also been meaning to hit the local pick-a-part which surprisingly has a few of these old trucks.

I'm reading Janette Sadik-Khan's "Street Fight" -- her book about her time as transportation head of NYC, building bike lanes, bikeshare, and pedestrian avenues

She prints this "city of the future" model from the 1939 World's Fair

Massive highways circling mammoth buildings; virtually no non-car routes; hilariously few trees

I'd love to read about: How did this become the vision of "the future" back in 1939?

What are some good books on that? Any recommendations, I'm all ears!

My grandparent's house was two stories and had an attic fan. It would pull air up and out the attic through the stairwell. It worked really well.

One more from the heap of raw ideas and unfinished projects: This one from almost precisely 2 years ago, going under the working title "Computational Lace", but really a kind of fractal process based on an initial 2D SDF, creating a surprising amount of complexity from even the simplest seed shapes...

This is again one of these projects requiring a full size view to appreciate the fine structures emerging...

US Ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, held a meeting with the newly elected anti-Ukraine, MAGA Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson.

During the meeting, Brink emphasized the significance of providing Ukraine with the opportunity to halt Russian aggression in Europe - it fell upon deaf ears!

Pappy,

Yeah, you guys, MAGA Republicans are pro-Russia. They like authoritarians and see Russia's regressive social values as a compliment to their world view. I'm not sure if they're in denial or just stupid when it comes to Russian aggression towards its neighbors.
