The weather was really nice yesterday afternoon so we went for a beach walk and watched another beautiful Maui sunset. Indy got his usual backpack ride for the walk back to the car.

Even though my Mastodon feed isn't showing it, I have been taking a bunch of photos in November so far. Indy tags along for most adventures and is enjoying our subtle turning of seasons.

So why the pink? This WorldView satellite image from 11/05/23 tells the story: our wetland in Central Maui isn't wet. It tends to be driest right before the winter rains, but I haven't seen it this dry where there is hardly any water at all in this area.

More than half the CO₂ emissions of the industrial age have been dumped into the atmosphere since 1990.

No doubt, investment in robust security features is absolutely necessary. I am constantly annoyed though with private businesses both small and large that see IT infrastructure and security features as an expensive nuisance. It's just a dumb upsell until their environment is crippled by ransomware and then we the IT professionals have to step in and mitigate these dumb and greedy decisions.

Lots of potential for vicarious traumatization due to videos (with sound) from Israel... be aware of that before clicking on videos of people being killed, bleeding to death, screaming, lying dead on the ground, etc. etc. (sound off, or better yet don't subject yourself to it if it's not for a good reason)

@ai6yr Truly. I watched a video yesterday where nothing graphic happened, but it was a journalist at the border of Gaza/Israel getting a warning about incoming artillery. The large computer screens at my desk and surround sound bar allowed me to be absorbed into the moment as I could hear mortars cross the sky (left to right on my setup) and see dust move around in high-def. It's incredible that we can be witness in real-time to these events, but we have to be our own moderators of what we see.

From a webcam set up at the Sheraton in Ka'anapali: not a single person on this stretch of very famous beach. Wow.

It's a gorgeous day where hundreds of people would normally be noticing that they missed a spot with regards to their sunscreen application. But no. These resorts are closed.

Another Indy photo for fun. He does make for a good partner when going out to a local brewery for a beer. He likes the ambiance of Mahalo Aleworks and enjoys watching a sunset from the balcony on the second floor.

Another photo taken this year with the drone. This was in April and there was some afternoon rain creating a gorgeous rainbow over the historic Lahaina town. This is quite the difference from what I saw yesterday 😭

The destroyed Lahainaluna neighborhood. This was a working-class area filled with residents who worked in Lahaina and kept things running all over the West side. Many of these homes had extra units on the plots to house extended family members.

Please understand that one home lost does not displace only one small family in most cases. It is common for homes in these types of neighborhoods to house multiple generations amplifying the devastation.

OK, back to my regularly scheduled programming (almost). I went for an afternoon walk along the Walker Preserve Trail and saw something a little unexpected: a crawfish! A quick look tells me this little guy is not native to these parts, but I'm sure they are happy to get some extra water in this typically dry part of the year.
