Does anyone have any own or have any experience with EGO brand outdoor electric power tools? Specifically, the push mower they sell. We went to a local home & garden show and I looked at one for half an hour. For me, I only see upsides, no gas, oil, filter, or any carburetor to rebuild. I cut 1/2 an acre or less and need to replace my old gas mower.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/EGO-56-Volt-Brushless-Lithium-Ion-Self-Propelled-21-in-Cordless-Electric-Lawn-Mower-Battery-Included/5000200363

I'd like some input from an actual owner though if I can find one.

@That_One_Guy We have owned an Ego 21” mower for a few years, now, and I have had basically ZERO issues with it.

My lot is a bit over a quarter acre, and if I don’t let the grass get too high, the mower will easily cut all of it, even when using the self-propel. The blade does a decent job, but if the grass is very tall or thick, it will lay down and require a second pass.

I’m on the original battery, and while the run time has decreased, it still does the job.

RockyC,
@RockyC@fosstodon.org avatar

@That_One_Guy I am also very impressed with its power - where my gas mower would bog down and stall on heavy grass, the Ego goes into turbo mode and can usually power through.

Mulching performance on tall thick grass is only so-so, with clumps of grass left behind, but that was true of my gas mower as well.

I’m really glad I got mine when I did - the price had gone up significantly last time I checked.

@RockyC@fosstodon.org avatar

@That_One_Guy I don’t remember the exact price, but I’m pretty sure ours was under $500 when we bought it before the pandemic.

@pete I remember when the Cybertruck first rolled onstage and I thought that Musk was trolling people and that he was going to roll out the ACTUAL truck in a moment…only that moment never came.

The Cybertruck is a white male pre-teen fantasy made manifest, possible only here in America where we worship money over everything else.

Today I learned that ketchup (catsup) is a shear-thickening non-Newtonian fluid, similar to oobleck.

That means beating the bottom of a glass ketchup bottle won’t make the ketchup come out any faster because the beating action actually INCREASES the ketchup’s viscosity.

Looks like Nobara Linux is number 2 to make the jump to KDE 6, right behind Arch.

I ran a software update today and there it was.

A warning to you folks who like to customize their desktops: 99.9% of the available KDE global themes currently do NOT work with KDE 6. As I write this, there are only 20 themes available, and I had issues downloading some of them.

@garshol Most of the changes at first glance seem to be refinements instead of drastic changes. The Settings menu is reorganized, click to select has been made the default, panels float by default, panel settings have been dramatically simplified, unnecessary visual elements like lines and borders in Dolphin have been either toned down or eliminated altogether, and of course, updates to the first-party apps.

To me, it feels less formal and a bit friendlier.

Hardcase just made the distro hop from Manjaro GNOME to Ultramarine KDE, and it just keeps getting better. Wake from sleep is MUCH faster now, and everything feels more smooth and polished.

For people who don’t want to bother with manually adding repos and changing default settings to make Fedora more user-friendly, Ultramarine Linux is a great drop-in replacement. Definitely give it a try.

Congratulations to the team developing Nobara. This was probably the easiest time I’ve EVER had installing and configuring a distro. It found my T420’s hybrid graphics and configured it automatically. Everything worked right OOTB on a 12-year-old ThinkPad.

Is there any good use for old and ancient iPads?

I inherited a couple devices. The laptop was so thoroughly hacked I gave up - HP locked down the bios making it pretty hard to install and UNETbootin wasn't working because the hacked device was blocked from downloading an ISO given my limited skills. Plus I didn't want to spend hours working trying to rescue a 10 year old hacked laptop.

RockyC,
@RockyC@fosstodon.org avatar

@rvaughnmd Unfortunately, Apple locks down their hardware pretty thoroughly - especially their bread and butter iOS devices. I know of NO other OS that successfully runs on an iOS device, and Apple limits the software lifespan to about 5 years or so.

Anything older than a 5th-gen is best recycled, IMO. The software is just too old and the hardware is too slow, but newer devices are fine for casual use - you just don’t get any more updates, so some stuff won’t work.

RockyC,
@RockyC@fosstodon.org avatar

@rvaughnmd I refuse to buy any new Apple desktops or laptops until they stop making it impossible to upgrade them and extend their lifespans.

My next laptop will be from .
My next smartphone will likely be a .
My next tablet will probably still be an iPad Pro because they really are that good. Nothing comes even remotely close. I do want to pick up a to play around with, though.
