@battusphilenor @ai6yr I’m amazed how many people go on cruises and airlines with Covid around…and then there is climate change.

The Can Opener Bridge lives up to its name once more. https://youtu.be/EAtvF7SYgw4

@mjausson I once had to investigate and report on a similar accident. The difference was that it was a flatbed truck with a missile launching system that was strapped to it that wouldn’t fit under a bridge. The launching system cost well over a million dollars. I had to figure out what went wrong since the route was carefully planned. It turned out that they hadn’t used the truck that was specified, they used a taller one. It was a very expensive mistake. The bridge that had been built by a public works program during the depression was significantly damaged but still usable as I recall, concrete is tough. Parts of the missile launching system were tore off and fell on the road.

I was just listening to a podcast that reported that Tesla has cancelled job offers to interns at the last minute. One student had already spent thousands on housing arrangements, etc and was making airline arrangements when Tesla rescinded their offer.

If you wonder why I am such a party pooper on AI, this is one of the reasons: (as we see increasing impacts of the climate crisis via extreme weather)

"AI could gobble up a quarter of all electricity in the U.S. by 2030 if it doesn’t break its energy addiction, says Arm Holdings exec"

@ai6yr Kind of amazed that it landed back in Florida. I wonder how many of those rather substantial parts landed somewhere else in the world and harmlessly buried themselves in the ground on impact never to be discovered or if so, recognized for what they are? 🤔

SteveInVentura,
@SteveInVentura@sfba.social avatar

@shonin @ai6yr Yeah, that thought had occurred to me. I had wondered if a marine archeologist might think they found Atlantis or something, someday. But the chances of anyone noticing one coming down anywhere must be very small.

The Flooding Will Come “No Matter What” by Abrahm Lustgarten April 11

The complex, contradictory & heartbreaking process of American climate migration is underway.

"...People have always moved as their environment has changed. But today, the climate is warming faster, and the population is larger, than at any point in history.

As the U.S. gets hotter, its coastal waters rise higher, its wildfires burn larger & its droughts last longer, the notion that humankind can triumph over nature is fading and with it...goes the belief that self-determination & personal preference can be the driving factors in choosing where to live.

...a sweeping change is coming in the shape & location of communities across America, a change that promises to transform the country’s politics, culture & economy.

It has already begun. More Americans are displaced by catastrophic climate-change-driven [disasters] every year..."

@shekinahcancook Yep, friends of mine moved north to the puget sound area because of the drought and coming climate change. I wanted to go too but all our relatives are in Southern California and Ventura will probably manage better than most towns. My daughter moved to the desert for cheap housing. I’m afraid that they are going to regret that move.

“J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience Home Charging Study found EV owners more satisfied with home chargers this year than last…..The improvement may come down to owners getting used to living with an EV. J.D. Power notes, “All three charging segments (levels) see year-over-year increases in overall problems among owners.” The most common problem among all owners was an inconsistent internet connection.”

“Regardless of whether Donald Trump wins or loses, there’s going to be violence,” said Michael Fanone, a retired police officer who was seriously injured by pro-Trump rioters at the US Capitol on 6 January 2021. “If Donald Trump loses, he’s not going to concede and he’s going to inspire people to commit acts of violence, just like he did in the weeks and months leading up to January 6 2021.

“If he wins, I also believe that there’s going to be violence committed by his supporters, targeting people who previously tried to hold him to account, whether it was members of the press, average citizens like myself, Department of Justice officials, state and federal prosecutors. I believe him when he says that he will have his vengeance.”
