@Mrfunkedude Once at work a hummingbird got into the big warehouse style building I was working in. It kept flying at the upper windows (at the height of a second story) trying to get out. We got a scissor lift and lifted me up to it. It was so tired it let me pick it up without a fight. I brought it outside and it flew away. I still can't believe how lightweight it was. It felt like I was holding a moth, not a bird.

This was before the age of smartphones, so I don't have a pic, sadly.

In case anyone else wants to know how to disable the dumb that enabled by default to live down in your taskbar in the latest update, here's how.

  1. Right-click an empty space on the taskbar and click "Taskbar settings."

  2. In the "Personalization > Taskbar" window that comes up, toggle the "Copilot (preview) switch from "on" to "off."

You're welcome.

I’m a big Phil Spencer fan, but I think the recent business strategy moves being taken with Xbox feels like it’s probably the beginning of the end of the platform in a meaningful way, from a customer point of view.

Xbox Game Pass will get rebranded Microsoft Game Pass next I think. I suspect Xbox would have performed better had MS sold it.

@GossiTheDog Personally, Microsoft hasn't come up with a single compelling reason for me to buy an Xbox since the Xbox 360. Literally any game I'm interested in that's on Xbox is also on PC.

I deeply relate to this article.

I was full of foolish loyalty to my employer in 2021, when the tech job market was piping hot. My reward for turning down a steady flow of recruiters? Getting kicked to the curb in a late-2022 layoff, dumped into the worst job market I've ever experienced in my career.

I know the data says the overall economy is doing great and the job market is in good shape, but that is definitely not the case in the tech sector right now. https://www.businessinsider.com/loyalty-employee-employer-job-security-broken-work-companies-bosses-2024-1

Trad Wife memes are always like a traditionally attractive skinny blonde woman in a white dress, in a field of flowers, holding hands with their immaculate children. The text always says something like, Why are you working a job, instead of doing your true calling? This is Godly Motherhood!

This how I know these are made by people who have never been around children, or possibly even women, and also never had to worry about money.

The_Tim,
@The_Tim@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr Just for laughs, I put that into the image-generating AI Midjourney.

"Why areu Motherhood" indeed.

are such BS. If things are going so badly at a company that they truly need to eliminate hundreds of jobs, then the VERY FIRST person that should get the axe 🪓 is the CEO that got the company into that situation.

But the CEO almost never gets fired in a layoff, even when they've been so bad at their job that the company has multiple rounds of layoffs.

Ugh, god. I'm sure there's not going to be any problem with the fact that Plex is leaning even harder into a business where you can buy and rent movies in direct competition with the thing that most of their user base is using their product for.

Holy moly - 179 US congress people signed an Amicus brief in Trump’s appeal to the US SCOTUS in the Colorado 14th amendment eligibility case, claiming that the the President doesn’t have a duty to uphold the US constitution.

There is a big debate on Reddit about whether "it's slowed down the traffic on our road" in this Calvin & Hobbes strip means cars are slowing down to gawk or there are fewer cars on the road because they're avoiding the street. https://old.reddit.com/r/ExplainTheJoke/comments/197luhq/im_perplexed/

Am I going crazy here or does only the first one make any sense? Nobody would say "slowed down the traffic" to mean fewer cars on a residential street, right? It's obviously that cars are slowing down… right?

I made the mistake of turning on MSNBC for a second right after was (surprise 🙄) called for . They were quoting some of the voters, and those voters were saying that (their) God chose Trump.

Then an MSNBC commentator (rightfully) made the point that nobody running against Trump could possibly compete with that.

At that point, I turned off the TV. I cannot stomach watching one second of this alarming, nauseating BS.

The_Tim,
@The_Tim@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff There are only two explanations I can think of for the huge amount of support he still gets:

  1. massive, unfathomably deep ignorance

  2. just plain spite

One of the problems with tech layoffs is the perception that it’s the poor performers being let go.

However the Cloudflare situation where a laid off salesperson posted a layoff video that went viral only for the CEO to confirm they were a poor performer is the worst possible outcome.

The_Tim,
@The_Tim@mastodon.social avatar

@carnage4life I'm having a hard time imagining any scenario in which the CEO would say anything other than "we made the right decision, she was a poor performer who deserved to be cut." Regardless of the truth of the matter.

What is the most ridiculous question or complaint that you've had from a Customer/Client?

The_Tim,
@The_Tim@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr Guy came into the tea & spice shop my wife & I own. I said "hello." He didn't respond. Didn't even make eye contact. Given his complete lack of response and his body language, and that we're in the Seattle area where people tend to be famously antisocial, I surmised that he preferred to be left alone to browse.

Nope, shortly after he exited the shop he left a 1-star Google review, complaining that I didn't offer to help him and insulting me personally. 🙄

It's our only 1-star review.

Since I'm stuck inside again, tell me a podcast I should listen to.

There can be only one! You get one choice, don't give me a list of 5, I can't do it.

Give me an episode that you think best represents the podcast.

The_Tim,
@The_Tim@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr Obviously you should listen to my podcast! "Dispatches From the Multiverse" is a silly improvised audio drama about parallel dimensions. Most episodes are ~20 minutes long, and there's a very large backlog at this point to keep anyone busy (over 250 episodes).

It makes the most sense if you start from the beginning, but if you want to try a later episode where we've gotten into our groove a little more, 77 is a good choice. Here's a direct link to that one: https://dispatches.fm/episode-77-planet-hi-fi/
