Reading Michael Lewis' book on Sam Bankman-Fried and... it's amazing people fell for this guy? He just seems like a generic nerd who thinks he knows everything because he doesn't care about how he dresses and didn't think Shakespeare was any good as a high school student, and can explain away being a dick with an expected value calculation. Like, he's not even a compelling fraud?

@ZachWeinersmith He had a single good play with the arbitrage thing that actually worked and made real money, and apparently that was enough for a bunch of people* to just assume he knew what he was talking about in all other areas.

*(Non-crypto-skeptic people, that is—I don't think any of the crypto skeptics like myself ever thought he was anything more than a more-eloquent-than-average crypto huckster.)

    @RickiTarr This one hits home, because my brother and his wife literally lost their home to a fire last week. She came home for lunch to find the home on fire.

    For the record, the one thing she chose to save was their dogs.

    @zoomar I hadn't heard about this show until reading your toot. Checking out the first episode… Spade seems very stiff and uncomfortable, and the editing is very jumpy. Odd vibe. I like the concept but the execution feels off.

    I can hardly believe this is real, but my brother and his wife's house had a major fire today. It looks like it will be a total loss. Thankfully they are both uninjured, and all their pets are OK as well.

    Do you ever think about abandoned tech trees? Like how no one is working to design better drafting compasses or vellum? No one is perfecting vacuum tubes. No one is laser focused on methods to speed paint and accurate portrait by hand to send out for marriage proposals.

    Technological leaps make entire areas of research pointless— but

    What if just a bit further down the line on the old tech tree there was some bigger breakthrough we’ll never see? I think about this A LOT.
