The square shovel was no match for the packed snow/ice today but the 4-tine digging fork FTW 💯. Broke and lifted in huge chunks, plowed right through the solid sheet covering the sidewalks.

TransitBiker,
@TransitBiker@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon it’s funny you mention that. We use a long handled flat spade (like a hoe, but straight) to break up heavy ice or anything too difficult for the shovel. We then opt for lightweight sturdy shovels that can scoop everything up and toss it a good distance.

TransitBiker,
@TransitBiker@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon We tried a tilling fork a couple of times, but it was too damaging to the concrete and paving underneath (pointy) & broke up the ice a bit too randomly. I’ve found that having that flat edge gives you a lot of control and precision.

Recent inspection reports from the Department of Buildings reveal that 20% of Manhattan parking garages inspected following a fatal collapse in April exhibit unsafe conditions, including cracking, corroding, and separating concrete.

https://www.wnyc.org/story/january-19-2024-morning-headlines

TransitBiker,
@TransitBiker@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit I got banned from Alan Fisher‘s discord for pointing out the obvious problems with that collapsed garage. I will add that there are many issues facing every municipality in this country when it comes to all types of proper inspections and corruption and collusion between real estate agents and home inspectors and so on. It’s actually alarming and we are not as safe as we think we should be. If you don’t believe me, just look at Champlain Towers. 😑

TransitBiker,
@TransitBiker@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit one of the issues with building with concrete is that it has to be properly engineered for all of the forces (dead/live load). Then all of the structural members have to be either tied in or isolated according to those loads. Then you have rebar spec & the actual formulation of the concrete mix & making sure that it’s properly hydrated & at curing temperature and all of that. You can get it wrong, or get it right & act neglectful. End result is people can die.

COVID barely gets a mention these days – here’s why that’s a dangerous situation.

"COVID complacency, by governments, the media and the public, is a threat to the overall health of the population, to health services and particularly to those most vulnerable, including older adults and those with pre-existing health conditions."

For those who are kindly trying to help:

My issues with Mastodon are on the web version only, not my iPhone.

It's only the "advanced interface" thingy that looks like TweetDeck, which is what I rely on. I hate single column.

So all those suggestions about apps for my phone don't apply. But thanks anyway.

As I said, I contacted my instance. No answer.

Others are having the same issue on Mastodon.social, apparently.

Other apps aren't as efficient or easy to use, so... no.

RT @augustap12 making IBX, the first significant orbital rapid transit line in new york, a low-floor light rail line would be a mistake.

instead of building a modern, world-class high capacity line like anywhere else, nyc is locking into a typical light rail to avoid one grade separation /1

a zoom-in of the street running portion of the ibx line caused by the cemetary. The tunnel is about a block long.

TransitBiker,
@TransitBiker@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit @augustap12 absolutely inappropriate application of this type of system. a light rail type system might work in Nassau county or staten Island, but there’s no way it would work in the other four Burroughs.

Ron Kilcoyne has an important message: that the biggest factor in attracting transit riders is simply the frequency of the service. And that's a good counter to the "advocates" who keep talking about fares.

But most of the elected officials who could fund more frequent service choose instead to fund bigger roads and more parking, which competes with transit service. We need to figure out how to get them to stop doing that.

https://streetsblog.libsyn.com/episode-457-want-riders-run-frequent-service

TransitBiker,
@TransitBiker@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit people are not going to use a service that they’re uncertain about. The best way to introduce certainty into car alternatives as to make those alternatives, reliable and timely.

TransitBiker,
@TransitBiker@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit no, I’ve been too busy and such unfortunately. Transit agencies want to save money by cutting frequency and routes, but what you’re actually doing is eliminating potential revenue & growth. We need good stewardship of these systems, and agency leadership that is not afraid to ask for more so that the public can benefit. It’s almost like those in power are allergic to making the right choice too frequently on these issues.

People are gushing over this renovated house in Brooklyn. It's got a beautiful façade, passive design, mass timber, and gratuitous plants. But it's way too small in a high-demand neighborhood, and just because it's a carriage house, it's been rebuilt with a garage:

"in its newest life behind a perfectly restored facade, the carriage house features a garage with a curb cut"

@coffeegeek @espresso @coffee If a company is aiming to do more than just make profit, they need to be able to be open to thoughts and ideas on their products and business practices that may make them rethink things in terms of product design and policy etc. If the customer is always right and you’re doing something wrong, you shouldn’t be rewarded for it with a review that is insincere.
