Sometimes the way people phrase things is so telling. For instance, telling women they should be "taking care of" their husband and children. Another adult doesn't need taken care of like a child, what you want is for women to be a Sex Mom.

@farah @RickiTarr I’m a dad and it’s amazing how many times I’ve been praised by people when doing ordinary parenting tasks in public.

Like, when I would take a toddler by myself to a coffee shop for breakfast, people would say “you’re doing great, Dad!” And while I guess it’s meant well, I’ve never seen that happen to a mom.

Another comment I’ve gotten is “I see you’re in charge today!” This happened to me when I was a SAHD, so I was like “I do this everyday 🤷🏽‍♂️”

I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

cohomologyisFUN,
@cohomologyisFUN@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr I haven’t read Laura Ingalls Wilder’s work, so I’m not going to comment on its suitability for curriculum, but if it is to be taught, it needs to be in the context of settler-colonialism and its impact on Native populations, especially the starvation of the Dakota and resulting war. (The war might help explain—but not excuse—Wilder’s anti-Native racism.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakota_War_of_1862

@aral yep.

I’m pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli, which is to say, I’m pro all the people living in that region. I think they ALL deserve peace, security, and freedom.

Also, I don’t think either group will have the peace, security, and freedom they deserve until both groups do.

That is Netanyahu’s foolishness, thinking he can bomb Palestinians to increase his people’s security. (Or maybe he knows that but doesn’t care, as long as he can stay in power.)

It feels like Democrats should stop helping these people in their war on students and higher education?

And so we should slay them and raze their schools?

Yeah, I don’t think the college students are the monsters here.

If you’re frustrated about what the online world has become, and you remember “the good old days” with nostalgia (rightly or wrongly), and you despair about our collective ability to find a way forward, this by @molly0xfff offers an important perspective. With reason for hope. She has become an essential voice, along with @pluralistic and Jaron Lanier.

It's strange to me when I see people get upset about people doing good deeds, and posting it online.

"They're just doing it for attention!"

Yeah, so what? I'd much rather see people doing nice things for attention, than the people who do mean pranks or wasting food. A good deed is still good, even if it's done for the wrong reasons.

cohomologyisFUN,
@cohomologyisFUN@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr for better or worse, people look to the behavior of others for clues about what is good behavior. That’s why if you donate to public radio, you sometimes get a sticker to put in your car window. The public radio station is hoping other people will see that sticker and think “Hey, that person is contributing, maybe I should too?”

I'm still not up to Black History! I'm still working through white US history. Bear with me! Almost there!

Q: Why does it seem like everything has to be woke now? Even our scientists?! It never used to be that way! Why does it seem like these days, even higher education has to think about race, when it didn't before?

A: Higher education, including STEM, did think about race before. That history has just been hidden from you. Because racism.

cohomologyisFUN,
@cohomologyisFUN@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@mekkaokereke people are so ridiculous. Part of a professor’s job, even at a research institution, is teaching (be it in front of a classroom or mentoring graduate students and post docs). Thinking about “the barriers facing women and racial/ethnic minorities” is part of being an effective teacher.

I don’t know how hard this would be to implement, but it would be cool if there was a way to suggest for images lacking it so that it was easy for the OP to add it. Like a dialog box that says something like “(at)soandso has suggested the following alt text for this image… Use suggestion / Don’t use”

Nimarata is a beautiful name. It's also Nikki Haley's first name.

Every time racist and xenophobic people in her base see that her name is Nimarata, she loses voters. The name has no impact on non-racist/non-xenophobes.

Her performing anti-Blackness and transphobia to try to win the presidential seat, or help Trump get elected and win the Vice Presidential seat, is bad.

Not bringing up the name Nimarata, helps her maintain the white supremacists in her coalition. That is what I don't want.

I’m an Asian American, and I know that my parents got married about a decade after Loving v. Virginia, before which their marriage (and mine) would have been illegal in some states. I know I’m protected against discrimination largely thanks to the blood and sweat of Black activists. And I understand that when fascists talk about “white genocide” or the “great replacement”, they are talking about me and my kids.

Asian Americans who side with the alt-right are fools.

We are apparently having a debate about whether it’s okay to “both sides” slavery in our schools. 😡🤬

The answer is NO. Just NO.

Perhaps some enslaved people learned skills that they later used to make a living after being freed. That’s grasping at straws to try to find a something good that came out of centuries of human misery inflicted for pure greed. It’s ridiculous.

I have found in myself a deep resentment toward many of the super-wealthy, and have sensed it in others as well. For me, it's not jealousy; if my neighbor has a nicer car than me, it doesn't bother me. It's not JUST because the super-wealthy build their wealth by exploiting the labor of everyone else, although that is part of it.

The biggest reason I resent many in the super-wealthy is that they use their wealth to push society in a way that favors them and harms everyone else. 1/

The notion that the terms “cis” and “cisgender” are slurs, now declared Twitter policy by Elon Musk, is some serious DARVO crap.

(DARVO = deny, attack, reverse victim & offender)

Marginalized groups have a history of rejecting the dominant groups terms for them in favor of terms that they find more suitable and authentic. People from the dominant group often express resentment about this, dismissing the new language as “politically correct” (in the 90s) or “woke” (today).

@peterdrake New York crust isn’t just thin, but kinda floppy.

In the Midwest the crust is often thin but hard, like a cracker—even in Chicago. (While deep-dish is associated with Chicago, I think most people eating pizza at Giordano’s are eating the thin-crust type.)

However, one thing that hurts my feelings is when someone expresses anger at all parents of autistic children. Not just THEIR parents, but blanket statements. 1/
