Since Bill Ackman and his followers have so many questions about how Wikipedia works now that his wife has been accused of plagiarizing from it, I figured I'd help him out.

@nicholas_saunders @molly0xfff which isn’t to say there aren’t people genuinely upset about the rise of antisemitism on campuses. I don’t like it either!

But the party welcoming neo-Nazis and other white nationalists into their fold—I simply do not believe they give a single care about antisemitism beyond its potential use as a political tactic.

Happy !

I'm still not up to Black History! I'm still working through white US history. Bear with me! Almost there!

Q: Why does it seem like everything has to be woke now? Even our scientists?! It never used to be that way! Why does it seem like these days, even higher education has to think about race, when it didn't before?

A: Higher education, including STEM, did think about race before. That history has just been hidden from you. Because racism.

@mekkaokereke people are so ridiculous. Part of a professor’s job, even at a research institution, is teaching (be it in front of a classroom or mentoring graduate students and post docs). Thinking about “the barriers facing women and racial/ethnic minorities” is part of being an effective teacher.

I wish I was kidding.

"Chain migration" is the BEST kind of immigration. You want people who move to you country to have a local network and support. You want new immigrants to bring their family, and the economic activity they generate and the value they add to communities to be in YOUR country.

I can't believe we let them use it like a slur. It's good and do it more.

What? They brought their elderly parents? That's good for US and for them (the new American we want to be successful and happy.) RIGHT?

cohomologyisFUN,
@cohomologyisFUN@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@not2b @Npars01 @futurebird yep! Every single anti-immigrant GOP talking point is understood to only apply to non-white immigrants. That’s in line with the “great replacement” rhetoric.

This is just a special case of a more general right-wing belief, which is that America exists solely for the benefit of white people.

Nimarata is a beautiful name. It's also Nikki Haley's first name.

Every time racist and xenophobic people in her base see that her name is Nimarata, she loses voters. The name has no impact on non-racist/non-xenophobes.

Her performing anti-Blackness and transphobia to try to win the presidential seat, or help Trump get elected and win the Vice Presidential seat, is bad.

Not bringing up the name Nimarata, helps her maintain the white supremacists in her coalition. That is what I don't want.

@mekkaokereke yep.

I’m an Asian American, and I know that my parents got married about a decade after Loving v. Virginia, before which their marriage (and mine) would have been illegal in some states. I know I’m protected against discrimination largely thanks to the blood and sweat of Black activists. And I understand that when fascists talk about “white genocide” or the “great replacement”, they are talking about me and my kids.

Asian Americans who side with the alt-right are fools.

It's strange to me when I see people get upset about people doing good deeds, and posting it online.

"They're just doing it for attention!"

Yeah, so what? I'd much rather see people doing nice things for attention, than the people who do mean pranks or wasting food. A good deed is still good, even if it's done for the wrong reasons.

cohomologyisFUN,
@cohomologyisFUN@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr for better or worse, people look to the behavior of others for clues about what is good behavior. That’s why if you donate to public radio, you sometimes get a sticker to put in your car window. Sometimes the way people phrase things is so telling. For instance, telling women they should be "taking care of" their husband and children. Another adult doesn't need taken care of like a child, what you want is for women to be a Sex Mom.

Another comment I’ve gotten is “I see you’re in charge today!” This happened to me when I was a SAHD, so I was like “I do this everyday 🤷🏽‍♂️”

@RickiTarr Was the valedictorian. I thought I was one of the smartest kids in my school but wasn't wise enough to understand how LITTLE this matters. I had trouble fitting in with my peers socially (partly due to being autistic—which I wouldn't learn until my early 40s—and partly because I was arrogant). I don't really like who I was back then. How do you feel about physical touch? I mean this is the broad sense, not necessarily in a sexual way, but you can answer however you wish.

Personally, I enjoy it a lot, and find it comforting, but only from really specific people. If strangers or people I don't know well want to hug me, it's okay, but I won't seek it out. I think handshakes are weird. Hey, you want to hold hands with a stranger for a short amount of time for some reason?

From Mother Jones:
"Dick Harpootlian, the party chairman, said whether Haley listed her race as white or not doesn’t really matter to him, but the issue is that the governor has shown a pattern of such actions.

'Haley has been appearing on television interviews where she calls herself a minority—when it suits her,' Harpootlian said. 'When she registers to vote she says she is white. She has developed a pattern of saying whatever is beneficial to her at the moment.'

I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

cohomologyisFUN,
@cohomologyisFUN@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr I haven’t read Laura Ingalls Wilder’s work, so I’m not going to comment on its suitability for curriculum, but if it is to be taught, it needs to be in the context of settler-colonialism and its impact on Native populations, especially the starvation of the Dakota and resulting war. @RickiTarr Yep. People see having their show discontinued, or having their product taken off store shelves, as some sort of mean punishment, rather than as a natural consequence of alienating viewers or customers.
