hello I have I created some more tongue-in-cheek ha-ha no-actually-really-serious images to help you manage replies in lieu of affordances to help you manage replies please steal and use if you find useful or, so help me, funny

  1. Do not reply unless you have direct experience
  2. Do not reply with a software suggestion
  3. (multipart) This is an observation. Do not attempt to help. No reply necessary.

YOU MAY REPLY if you have a suggestion or request for another helpful informational message.

An information message to manage replies. It reads DO NOT REPLY WITH A SOFTWARE SUGGESTION ANTWORTEN SIE NICHT MIT EINEM SOFTWARE-VORSCHLAG NO RESPONDA CON UNA SUGERENCIA DE SOFTWARE NE RÉPONDEZ PAS AVEC UNE SUGGESTION DE LOGICIEL
An information message to manage replies. It reads: THIS IS AN OBSERVATION DIES IST EINE BEOBACHTUNG ESTA ES UNA OBSERVACIÓN DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HELP VERSUCHEN SIE NICHT, ZU HELFEN NO INTENTE AYUDAR NO REPLY NECESSARY KEINE ANTWORT ERFORDERLICH NO ES NECESARIA RESPUESTA

in other news, when you search for "urgent care" at your health insurance provider's directory, and the database clearly includes opening hours for each provider, PERHAPS PROVIDE A WAY OF FILTERING FOR AND PRIORITIZING THE ONES THAT ARE ACTUALLY OPEN

the whole "don't worry, inflation's fine!" to mean “the economy is doing ok why are you complaining” is a massive example of directly contradicting peoples' day-to-day experience when:

  • things do cost more, still
  • horrific layoffs are happening

and there’s personal experience of an increase in shitty bureaucracy and shitty capitalism (see: enshittification) that just makes life harder

Never buying a house again without some sort of mmWave terahertz high res scan, thumper-style underground survey and a fully reconstructed digital twin going back until the land was first stolen wtf

also still figuring out how to do GitHub for houses and document version changes

hell just having a place to take pictures of everything

I'm gonna be that guy and point out that when people say "the Fediverse" what they probably more specifically mean is "what's implemented by Mastodon, a social network built on top of ActivityPub" and that for certain conversations, this matters.

If your code of conduct hasn't grown from "don't be a dick"to thirty pages of clearly written explanatory notes along with actions taken over the last 15+ years then are you really running an online community*

  • no you are not and for the avoidance of doubt the above is a super good sign that you are doing a good job

You know, I bet a whole bunch of "onboarding people to Mastodon is hard because of the choosing an instance thing" could be mitigated by letting instance users generate and share invite codes to the instance they're using, which are effectively just links to that instance's signup page, but see how they'd already feel different?

@danhon@dan.mastohon.com avatar

So you're telling me these Bluesky invite codes I've been holding on to as an investment are worthless now. Well great. Just fucking great. What the fuck.

this is probably the best place to ask:

what're the exact steps I should take to stop using pinboard and switch to something else?

  1. 68,731 bookmarks in pinboard
  2. I use the pinboard bookmarklet in macos safari
  3. I use/pay for full text search
  4. I add bookmarks on iOS from the share sheet using Pushinpin.app
  5. I browse/search my bookmarks on the pinboard website (e.g. Pushpin can't handle my 68k bookmarks)
  6. bookmarking needs to be fast. extensions are slow on macOS Safari.

Wanna know a big reason why sending email to, say, 15k people costs a lot of money/effort/time?

Would you be interested in learning about the difficulties of assuring delivery into an inbox when there's, say, only two major email providers who just do whatever they want?

I guess the era of cheap APIs to build platforms is over now that cheap money has gone and all those platforms need to focus on profitability, it's kind of like ppv doubling down on increasing fees.

Hot take: spatial computing née virtual/augmented reality will be super depressing for information workers (sic), never mind everyone else, because all information work is still broadly document-centric, which means windows of things that still broadly look like bits of paper.
