At long last, my Jewish-themes fantasy comic is coming to fruition. Here is a page in which the two main characters first meet. They realize that they’re each searching for something that can only be found with the help of the other.

@dukepaaron @nevo @littlemiao That's precisely what "Zone of Interest" defies though - by making the "monsters" of the film truly banal, everyday people who want the best for themselves and their families and are completely fine doing it by means of unfiltered, culturally acceptable hatred.

I'm sick of this rental economy.

I need some input.

I dyed this wool using Hexaplex Trunculus (Chilazon) Tekhelet dye for the purpose of tying tzitzit. For those who don’t know, you can get a purple-blue spectrum of colors when you work with it. Tekhelet by Halacha is to be blue, but rabbinical sources disagree as to the type of blue (shock, I know).

I’m not worried about it being the same correct blue. I want to know- do these colors look “blue” to you? Samples of the undyed wool are also there.

(I am aware many (possibly most) Jews don’t accept this method of Tekhelet, but having read up on it the case is personally convincing to me.)

On the final day of the summit in Arizona, multiple protesters locked down in front of the suburban mansion of a Nationwide Insurance executive to pressure Nationwide to stop supporting police militarization.

Across the country in New York City, 200 people marched to the joint offices of AXA XL and Nationwide Insurance, both of which profit from the ongoing genocide in Gaza as well as their ties to the Atlanta police foundation and Cop City. Over 100 protesters stormed to the building, hanging banners and disrupting business.

This is not a local struggle!

@CrimethInc "Zionist Dystopia"? wtf is that and what does it have to do with Cop City?? Is Cop City suddenly advocating Jewish self-determination?

emilyk,
@emilyk@babka.social avatar

@CrimethInc @MeanestBossEver that makes no sense. Self determination means self-governance and autonomy. Not “I can do what I want where I am.”

Stop using anti-Zionist Jews as Pokémon you can throw out to justify your willful ignorance. Take a page from antiracism and actually listen to the people who have been oppressed, colonized, and brutalized continuously for 2,000+ years. Those voices are also valid. And in Israel, most Jews are people whom you’d call “brown” in the US.

Let's make this clear... Making lists of Jews and where they live isn't "Pro-Palestinian".

Furthermore, calling this and similar actions "silencing Pro-Palestinian voices" conflates the Palestinian cause with hate, which not only harms Jews, but also legitimate Pro-Palestinian voices.

ANTI-ZIONISM AND SUPPORT FOR THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE HAVE GROWN AMONG LEFTIST AND LEFTY JEWS, ESPECIALLY AMONG PEOPLE UNDER THE AGE OF 30. AND YET, JEWISH KIDS WERE AND STILL ARE GIVEN A JEWISH EDUCATION THAT IS BROADLY "PRO-ISRAEL." I THINK THERE ARE SEVERAL FACTORS AT PLAY, AND NO, I DON'T THINK TIKTOK IS TO BLAME. MILLENNIALS AND ZOOMERS GREW UP IN A SYNAGOGUE CULTURE THAT HAS, IN MY EXPERIENCE, DONE A SUBPAR JOB TEACHING JEWISH HISTORY. MY OWN JEWISH EDUCATION SKEWED HEAVILY TOWARD ASHKENAZI/EASTERN EUROPEAN HOST CENTRAL PONT OF SET TEETAGE, AND GLOSSED OVER THE COMPLEX HISTORY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL. [image of protest signs] It's Kosher Boycott Israel #FREE GAZA END ZIONISM, FREE PALESTINE! [image of a Discord chat between two people] Amir_S: Just heard from my Dad. My cousin was killed in the Gaza strikes.. Hannah: Oh my god.. I'm so so sorry Amir_S: My uncle is stranded in the West Bank because his work permit was revoked. He can't get to the funeral, if they can even have one THIS KIND OF EDUCATION LEAVES A VOID OF KNOWLEDGE TO BE FILLED, OFTEN BY FREE-FLOWING INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET. AND WHILE I DON'T THINK SOCIAL MEDIA ITSELF IS A CAUSE OF THE SHIFT IN YOUNG JEWISH ATTITUDES, THE FACT THAT WE ARE MUCH MORE ONLINE THAN PREVIOUS GENERATIONS HAS DOUBTLESSLY AFFECTED OUR VIEWS. FOR ONE THING, IT IS EASIER THAN EVER TO TALK DIRECTLY TO PALESTINIANS.
GEN Z HAS NEVER KNOWN AN "UNDERDOG ISRAEL" MILLENNIALS AND GEN Z WERE BORN INTO A WORLD WHERE NOT ONLY DOES ISRAEL EXIST, IT'S A MIGHTY NATION WITH ONE OF THE MOST ADVANCED MILITARIES IN THE WORLD. IT HAS THE UNSHAKING BACKING OF THE UNITED STATES FINANCIALLY AND POLITICALLY, AND HAS RECEIVED LITTLE - IF ANY - PUSHBACK FOR THEIR ACTIONS. BOOMERS REMEMBER THE SIX DAY WAR AND THE YOM KIPPUR WAR, TWO CONFLICTS THAT WERE A REAL THREAT TO ISRAEL'S EXISTENCE. MILLENNIALS REMEMBER THE 2ND INTIFADA, IN WHICH HUNDREDS OF ISRAELIS WERE MURDERED BY TERRORISTS. MANY OF US REMEMBER PRIME MINISTER YITZHAK RABIN'S ASSASSINATION. BUT GEN Z ONLY KNOWS AN ISRAEL WITH AN ENTRENCHED RIGHT WING GOVERNMENT MORE INTERESTED IN UPHOLDING AN UNJUST STATUS QUO THAN ACHIEVING TRUE PEACE. GAZA HAS BEEN UNDER BLOCKADE SINCE 2006 TIMIN THE OCCUPATION OF THE WEST BANK STARTED DECADES BEFORE THAT. THEY'VE ONLY KNOWN AN ISRAEL AT ODDS WITH THEIR BASIC MORALS. [image: far right israeli politicians pontificating, with right wing Israeli party logos surrounding them]
BACKLASH TO THE STATUS QUO OF JEWISH EDUCATION I REMEMBER FEELING EXHAUSTED BY HOW THE HOLOCAUST WAS MADE A CENTRAL PART OF MY JEWISH EDUCATION. WHEN JEWISH JOY WAS INCLUDED, IT WAS USUALLY FRAMED AROUND SURVIVAL - MOST OFTEN FROM AN ASHKENAZI PERSPECTIVE. WHERE WAS THE JEWISH JOY THAT CAME FROM WITHIN? WHERE WAS THE BRILLIANT, OFTEN HUMOROUS, TALMUDIC EPHEMERA THAT MADE US SO UNIQUE AS PEOPLE OF SCRIPTURE? WHERE WAS THE MYSTICISM SO CAREFULLY GUARDED BY OUR ANCESTORS? IF ALL WE KNOW IS OPPRESSION, THEN THE SAFEGUARD OF ISRAEL MUST BE DEFENDED AT ALL COSTS. JEWISH YOUTH ARE TAUGHT TO SUPPORT ZIONISM NOT AS A COMPLEX POLITICAL MOVEMENT, BUT AS PART OF THE EXISTENTIAL STRUGGLE AGAINST THE WIDER WORLD'S ANTISEMITISM. SO WHEN THEY LEARN FOR THE FIRST TIME ABOUT THE NAKBA, AND THE HARSH REALITIES OF LIVING UNDER OCCUPATION, ZIONISM MORPHS FROM A MOVEMENT FOR THE SELF-DETERMINATION OF AN OPPRESSED PEOPLE TO AN OPPRESSIVE, RIGHT WING IDEOLOGY THAT WAS ALWAYS INVESTED IN ETHNIC DISPLACEMENT. [two drawings of famous photos, both of Nazis mocking orthodox Polish Jews in tallit and tefillin. In one they force him to say kaddish before shooting him, in the other they cut off his peyot and beard.]

New Comic - "Akirah - Displacement"

There has been an increasing awareness of the “Nakhba,” in which 700,000 Palestinian Arabs were displaced during the Arab-Israeli War in 1948. Fewer know about the larger, longer displacement of Jews from the Arab World between 1948 and the 1970s. 1/n

  • $61.93 AUD per month on Beehiiv
  • $100+ AUD per month on Ghost
  • $46 AUD per month on Squarespace

I’m old enough to remember when smoking (and smoke) was everywhere, and the idea that smokers might ever be asked or made to stop was seen as absurd. Many kids (including me) got horrible bronchitis every single year and had other sorts of breathing problems all the time. Many parents (and other adults) died early.
