Looking for a dev to help lead Mammoth. Needs passion for user experience & fedi, ideally has played a key role in end user app already. Codebase is in Swift + UIKit but we are flexible, want to talk to visionary devs. $5,000/mo, fully open source, AGPL. Can be a (major!) side hustle. HMU at bdecrem on g mail or bartdecrem on discord.

I just added notes on Hubzilla to https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/making-fediverse-apps-for-everyone/.

Huge thanks to @jupiter_rowland for providing some points!

Anything else I'm missing here, particularly:

  • OAuth scopes
  • sharing via URL
  • embedding posts
  • RSS feeds

https://blog.commune.sh/weird-happenings/

After two months of development, a LOT has happened in the Weird project.

Weird is a web application built to increase the agency of internet users. We are building three interconnected pillars as our foundation:

  • Independent social sign-in rooted in the OIDC standard as keymaster
  • A personal web space creator
  • An actually-social network of shared purpose

In two weeks we're starting our pilot with the Norwegian Buddhist Foundation!

I wrote up a bunch of the lessons I learned while trying to get the official mastodon image running in docker. It ended up being quite long. Sorry.

I think the audience for this post is mostly the mastodon devs. Maybe they can help answer why some of this stuff is the way it is. But if you're a person who is interested in errata around docker, rails and mastodon, it's for you too!

There's no good way to prevent AI models from being trained on art published on the fediverse. But there's work we can do to prevent it and protect the artists who post there. https://werd.io/2024/protecting-artists-on-the-fediverse

Today something happened for the !

Petition was presented in Canada's House of Commons on behalf of over 1000 supporters! The government must now respond!

It was a group effort including @Dragon @chad @Dunstable @bougiewonderland @LALegault @mike @stephanie @danamcfarland @bluefacedbeast and 1003 more!

In 🇨🇦? Write the Speaker and your MP! Send them this post! Outside 🇨🇦 ? Use this example!

We can make it happen!! 😊 👊

A video of the House of Commons routine proceedings presenting petitions. It starts with a view of the speakers chair and green seats in front of him with two large doors behind. Then it switches to View of MP Gordon John as he presents the petition.

Post.news closes down tomorrow. What can we learn from it?

Monetizing posts, with profits going to the author, is difficult but possible without relying on crypto. Kudos for the attempt!

Focusing on one aspect - news - diminishes your user base to a specific interest group.

And, being a closed instance without an API or federation to other platforms made survival difficult.

The For You Feed is a very efficient way to make sure you don't leave the app but an inefficient way to consume a never-ending firehose of content.
The catch-up feature on @phanpy (by @cheeaun) is one of many alternatives that give you more control over your media intake. It's how I scroll through my Mastodon and other feeds on daily basis.

Social media doesn't have to be a doomscroll of random events. It can be better.

I'm excited about IFTAS Connect. It's a great platform, and considerable though seems to have gone into making it safe and productive. Seems like a great tool for the Fediverse community.

We got a ton of responses to our pledge of $10,000 in seed funding to help kickstart a federated Deviant Art alternative. Submission deadline is next TUE, June 4. Pls checkout the FAQ & spread the word. We’re esp eager to hear from builders in the Deviant Art community (maybe new to ActivityPub) https://melted-april-eb6.notion.site/FAQ-Project-Defiant-df2b81bd5613434383bead3aca67c83b?pvs=4

New: What is Farcaster, and why did a16z value it at 1 billion dollar?

#Farcaster is a decentralised social network that has seen significant growth recently, with currently around 80k daily active users. The network has strong ties with crypto and Ethereum. They got an investment of $150M recently by (among others) a16z.

I take a closer look at how Farcaster works, and why some crypto VCs think its worth a billion dollars.

"The Verge and 404 Media are building out new functions that would allow them to distribute posts on their sites and on federated platforms – like Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky – at the same time. Replies to those posts on those platforms become comments on their sites."

If you're not looking at @theverge and @404mediaco as social web platforms that are hosting hand-picked content creators with a publisher's infrastructure, you're not paying attention.

Iceshrimp: A #csharp fediverse platform

Was just told (by @Subversivo ) about this: https://iceshrimp.dev/iceshrimp/iceshrimp.net

#Iceshrimp are rewriting the whole thing (a JS/Node #misskey / #firefish fork) in C# with Blazor for the frontend.

Cool to see. Should handle the performance issues that have plagued the *key forks and maybe provide a new general branch of fediverse platform.

What lang/stack isn't represented on the fediverse now? C++, Kotlin?

From the @fediversereport newsletter - worth a subscribe!

“The theme.. is clearly about the various ways people are building bridges and are starting to think about connecting their products and platforms together to form a larger social web. The way things are developing the underlying protocol starts become less of a defining feature of the fediverse, and the possibility of connecting your network/product/website to the fediverse starts to matter more and more.”
