Just had this message from a friend and I am raging! “Think my running journey is over... Didn't make it2 10k as ran past a man who whistled at me & then stuck his foot out. Couldn't dodge it fast enough so went flying. Not sure I'll have the confidence to go out again
Being a woman feels really hard sometimes... 😔😔” Picture of cut lips and hand.

I have been cat called so many times running, and once a young man slapped my bum from behind and tried to pull me into the bushes, but I think this is worse. Why the fuck is women feeling powerful through running something men feel compelled to try and take away?

Do not “not all men” me

@purplepadma Oh no, I'm so sorry for your friend!
I recently joined a running group that is open to anyone except cis men. We went for a run yesterday, 12 of us, and it felt so nice, and safe, and joyous. At the same time, it makes me furious that we have to look for safety in numbers. It makes me furious that I have to worry about where and when I run, and what I'm wearing.

Botswana threatens to send 20,000 elephants to Germany | Environment News | Al Jazeera

“Angered by proposals in Berlin to restrict the import of hunting trophies, President Mokgweetsi Masisi said in comments published on Wednesday that Germans should try living among elephants. He claimed that an explosion in the number of the mammals roaming his country has produced a “plague”.”

@pvonhellermannn I'd pay a lot to see a herd of elephants set lose in the streets of Berlin, if I wasn't worried about their health and safety.

This is what happens when you give me a decorative sprig of mint to go with my food.

That's four varieties of mint, then. Once it's a bit larger, this one can join the other three outside.

I've had several pieces of my academic writing reviewed by various people over the past 2-3 weeks and one critique keeps cropping up: "Your writing isn't neutral enough/too political."
Well, folks. I consider that a job well done. First of all, let's not kid ourselves, neutrality in academia is an illusion, because we are all human. Secondly, we are well past the point where it's useful or even possible to be universally inoffensive in our writing. Let's be honest instead.

The 1984 expansion "Die Werkzeuge des Meisters" (Tools of the Master) for the seminal German "Das schwarze Auge" (The Black Eye) contained this plastic mask for the GM to wear. It proved completely unnecessary and was omitted from later editions of the rules set.

@mrundkvist But you have to admit it looks sort of cool. If we hadn't moved online, I would totally vote for our GM wearing this mask.

@NatureMC @Fischblog Absolut! Das Problem ist nur, bei diesen großangelegten Kampagnen geht es oft viel zu sehr um beeindruckende Zahlen und weniger um tatsächliche Verbesserungen. Und es richtig zu machen ist meistens auch aufwendiger.

    Spent this morning reading about the AMOC showing signs of collapse. And this afternoon having coffee with a group of genuinely nice folks, who were telling each other about their travel plans for the year, all involving several long-distance flights. I just sat there staring into my cup. How do you deal with the cognitive dissonance? Because as it goes on, I feel that it's turning me increasingly speechless.

    @KrissyKat The lawyer in my brain says, that's illegal discrimination (as opposed to legal discrimination, which also happens) and will not fly, at least not inside the EU. Might take a few years to make it through the courts, though, which sucks.

    What is happening in Europe and the farmer's protest is something that needed to happen a long time ago.

    When I was a child I was taught to never bite the hands of those who feed you, but for the sake of greed and money, biting the hands of farmers has become a hobby and a lobby.

    My grandparents had a dairy farm in Europe and I remember as a child how difficult already it was to follow all the rules and regulations. There is nothing new in that. It was already at the time difficult to make an income.

    This is why in my opinion laissez-faire is here a folly that has ruined the farmers. We need rules, but to have the same for everyone.

    On this account, we stand for farmers because without farms there is no food and because farmers are those who can be a solution to help fix the climate by putting the carbon back into the topsoil.

    franzi,
    @franzi@ecoevo.social avatar

    @compost You do realize that the farmer's protests in Germany are about the government cutting off climate-harming subsidies and are being pushed by a small but powerful agri-industrial lobby that has been using it's influence on politics for decades to the detriment of small farmers? Farm subsidies are also the largest part of the EU budget and all attempts at making them more climate and biodiversity friendly have so far been torpedoed by the same lobby.

    franzi,
    @franzi@ecoevo.social avatar

    @compost Well, thanks for clarifying that, because it does matter. There are protests going on in several countries right now, and also by different groups within the same country. I was at an annual march for a better food and farming system a few weeks ago, while at the same time, industrial farmers were blockading half the city, protesting for their right to go on destroying the climate and their own livelihood. It was surreal.

    As someone who lived with actual subsistance farmers for a couple years, I have to roll my eyes at survivalists and other farm romanticizers who blithely talk about "we'll grow our own food!" as if that were the easier option than keeping our society's ship afloat.

    Farming to feed yourself is hard. Really hard. Y'all have no idea.

    franzi,
    @franzi@ecoevo.social avatar

    @alexwild Everyone should experience growing some of their own food. If they realized how much work it is, maybe they would value food more and be willing to pay a decent amount for it, which is a real issue here in Germany. People are willing to pay for all sorts of nonsense, but God help you if you suggest that they spend more on food.
