A pretty decent thunderstorm rolled through and knocked our power out. Despite their claims to the contrary, our local power company is completely negligent about maintaining their infrastructure, so trees are forever falling on the lines. We’re used to it, but I still get irked about it.

No idea how long we’ll be down, but two hours in and no ETA means it’s going to be awhile.

We’re fine. Cooking steaks on the grill and we’d brought home ingredients for strawberry shortcakes. Not all bad!

@mlawton please keep posting! I'd love to see your post mortem. We've got our own preps, solar panels, battery packs, water, etc... but I haven't had the misfortune of using them yet. Would love to know what works, what goes well, what fails, and how it fails. (Would even be willing to interview you and type it up myself if you only wanna speak it, and not put in the energy to edit etc...) also, any way we can help?

One of the fun parts of being a mirror operator is that you get to deal with China Mobile using ISO download mirrors to fix their traffic ratios with other ISPs at peering points.

Looks like they've moved to using Slackware now...

@kwf im trying to follow along but im missing it. Could you provide an eli5? I cant understand why they would do this.

I've always used dashes like this:

Thing - Other Thing

But some people use them like this:

Thing- Other Thing

And I have no idea why... The space on both sides of the ' - ' makes sense to me, but why do people jam it onto the end of the word?

iaintshootinmis,
@iaintshootinmis@digitaldarkage.cc avatar

@rasterweb but once-in-a-while we use them like this

Wrote a quick write up with wiki-links on how to setup a core OpenBSD system and then install DWM on top:

@tdarb could you share what use cases an openbsd desktop can be used for? I've been on Linux a long time but am curious about BSD. I don't see many open source projects offer bsd specific packages. Do you do a lot of compiling from scratch?

So I regularly run "tootctl statuses remove" on my self-hosted Mastodon server.

Still, I somehow have 1,344,736 statuses in my DB. Any tips how to clean things up?

Ideally I'd like to run something like:

tootctl statuses remove --days=90 --include-follows

iaintshootinmis,
@iaintshootinmis@digitaldarkage.cc avatar

@stefan im not at a keyboard at the moment. But i also run digitaldarkage as a self host. I have a cron job that runs cleanups every night at a minimum. Can give you some of my statistics in a bit if you're interested

iaintshootinmis,
@iaintshootinmis@digitaldarkage.cc avatar

@stefan Apologies, I forgot to reply to this, Here's my current setup.

I have a crontab running under the mastodon user that does the below

1 2 * * * RAILS_ENV=production /home/mastodon/live/bin/tootctl media remove --days=2

30 2 * * *
RAILS_ENV=production /home/mastodon/live/bin/tootctl preview_cards remove --days=2

AKA at 2a and 2:30 I clear the media and preview cards for anything over 2 days.

@foone no worries, while i have you, when i was very very broke i came across a treasure trove of old disks and offered em to you and you even sent me your shipping address (on bird site DMs). Then Covid happened and most of my belongings ended up in storage. I just found a box marked 'for Foone' would you be interested in me providing a contents list and shipping it out if you're agreeable?

Also, he call's out the quiet part. Cloudflare isn't a great mask for where your actual services are hosted b/c of reasons (see the post!)

/usr/sbin/shutdown is a symbolic link to /bin/systemctl

BUT running shutdown -r now restarts the system, and running /bin/systemctl -r now errors out. They're the exact same executable.

What's the trick here?

Gonna write this up better later. But thanks to @tbaraki , we found a fluke in Microsoft's SignonLogs table. Sometime in the last few days they made UserPrincipalName case sensitive.

So our alerts looking for breakglassadmin@CompanyName.onmicrosoft.com started failing because we were using (==) instead of (has).

Would highly recommend you check your alerting and see which operands you're using in your queries.

iaintshootinmis,
@iaintshootinmis@digitaldarkage.cc avatar

@GossiTheDog @tbaraki yep, one of the queries I was fiddling with saw a 90%+ reduction in returned events because of the change. And it wasn't consistent. It flapped between a several hours period since Tuesday as to whether or not it was recorded to the SignonLogs table as CompanyName.onmicrosoft vs companyname.onmicrosoft.com

Its now CompanyName.onmicrosoft.com

Good morning to readers; Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

Today's issue is about how I failed to become a U.S. Army Green Beret.

It's a pretty personal reflection, so we've made the essay for paid members only.

Consider upgrading if you haven't!

I went to the recruiter's office and he offered me an 18x slot. I said no. I have also failed to become a green beret. 😔🤕
