The Police Department needs to be torn down and restarted from scratch

Refusing to enforce laws, rejecting oversight and discipline, displaying mock tombstones of those they shot, and laughing at a pedestrian killed by a cop going 75mph in a 25mph zone are absolutely reprehensible

The time for incremental solutions has passed. The cancer has taken over and the only way forward is to dismantle the SPD and start fresh

Back when I went to UW, Seven Cafe in Ravenna was one of my favorite spots to chill

Neighborhood cafes like are currently illegal to build. The only reason Seven exists is because it was built before those laws went into place

There's currently a bill in the WA Senate that will make neighborhood cafes legal again, but it's at risk of being gutted

I highly recommend and residents write their representatives to support this bill

Coming up on one year in . I'm incredibly thankful that, while there are certainly issues, the public transit and bike infrastructure in this city are good enough to make this possible

Probably preaching to the choir here but rental electric scooters and bikes have allowed me and my friends to replace literally dozens of car trips. These guys don't care about the environment or at all, but they now love bike lanes because we rely on them every weekend the weather is good to go get food

I'm sympathetic to people who have had bad experiences with these rental scooters speeding on sidewalks, but once again the solution here is more bike lanes, not banning them

Literally no mainstream science organization supports the position "we're doomed so just give up" and yet somehow that's a common belief

How did we wind up here? This seems like a catastrophically bad messaging failure

As another year passes by here on Mastodon, I’m more and more convinced that self hosting my own instance was the right call. I fear less and less for the ”risks” in continuity of all this. I guess I trust my enterprise level server skills enough. The confidence in myself is definitely up a notch.

@rolle I've found that having less-critical hobby servers has made me better at my job of being a sysadmin. It provides a good opportunity to experiment with new tools and make small mistakes in a safer environment. The job is so experience-based that every new addition to the toolkit is an asset

tooters, what's your take on electric mopeds?

In the same way that e-bikes are better suited for higher speeds and longer distances than electric scooters, electric mopeds seem like they could fill a currently empty niche, but I've never actually seen one here in Seattle

Of course they require a license and insurance to drive, so that ups the cost, but are they something that we should push for?

jenbanim, to random
@jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

Riding a bike burns about 50 Calories per mile. Burning a gallon of gas releases about 8,800 grams CO2e. By knowing how many grams of CO2 are emitted per Calorie of food, we can calculate the miles per gallon equivalent (in terms of GHG emissions) for biking depending on what you eat. Using values from here:

https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/ghg-kcal-poore

I get:

Calorie Source | Biking Fuel Economy
Beef | 5 MPG
Chicken | 32 MPG
Apples | 195 MPG
Wheat | 298 MPG
Nuts | 2514 MPG

To participate in society in most of the US you need a license from the government, insurance from a corporation, and a lease from a bank to drive a car that comes equipped with a GPS whose position data is regularly given to police without a warrant and without your knowledge

But people call living within 15 minutes of a grocery store dystopian

So, I'm thinking about the intermediate axis theorem and how it applies to ballistics and projectile behavior in a zero atmosphere, zero gravity environment.

Bows and crossbows could be interesting self-defense choices in such an environment because they wouldn't have to deal with the overheating issues of traditional firearms. But I'm wondering if those long, cylindrical projectiles would begin to tumble before striking their target.

Smart people of Mastodon, any thoughts?

jenbanim,
@jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Legit_Spaghetti The intermediate axis theorem only applies to objects with three distinct moments of inertia. Anything with rotational symmetry only has two moments of inertia so the theorem won't apply

I think this means cylindrical projectiles would rotate stably about their axis, but I'm not sure. Things become complicated especially when you have a flexible body, see the tumbling of Explorer 1

today is the last open house for the comprehensive plan! The current draft plan is atrociously bad and will lead to increased rent, more homelessness, more pollution, and worse transit if adopted as-is. If you have a chance, I highly recommend coming out tonight to take advantage of the last opportunity we have to ask our representatives for more housing in person

Less than half [of Americans] think electric cars are better for the climate. Pretty damning, considering there is strong consensus that EVs have a lower carbon footprint (even when the electricity mix is pretty heavy in coal).3 Electric cars are certainly better for the climate in the United States.

This is bad. Let your friends and family know that EVs are good, actually
