@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com

Got two Turing tables and some microcode.

I work on back-end server-y type stuff at a place that keeps rockin' the free web. I like rust, python, and horrible puns (not necessarily in that order).

I tend to be nice for selfish reasons (I don't like hanging out with jerks).

Had an interesting conversation yesterday with someone that reminded me how weird Corporate and Open Source development is.

He asked what sort of qualifications and degrees are required to work on the rust compiler.

I told him: "Well, none. You could grab a ticket and create a PR. Now, getting that PR landed means it's going to be super scrutinized."

There are PhDs with dozens of AWS certs relying on code written by college drop-outs.

It's a really, really weird world.

Watching Google I/O's presentations.

They're pushing generative A.I. so much that I'm starting to count the number of fingers on presenters.

I still hold that Firefox Multi-containers are like a hidden superpower.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Really useful when you want to group and sandbox sites, self organize tabs, and all sorts of other fun things.

Really wish more folk knew about that feature.

Work is entering the super fun Self Review period again.

Quick note: If there's a way to leave a Kudo or Compliment to someone using an internal tool, Do It!

Not only is it nice for the person to read, it can be a HUGE help for them.

Even something like "Sara was a huge help for me understanding XYZ" is good enough.

What is in the box?

Hand compression.

"I must not fear.
Fear is the hand compressor.
Fear is the cloth lined warmer that brings dual air pockets.
I will face my fear and wonder why I am getting a hand job.
I will face the consequences of how I stated that."

Having worked with browsers for a very long time, I'm just going to point out that making a modern browser is exceptionally difficult. There are LOTS of hidden costs and gotchas ranging from CVE protections, to back-end service supports, to even just getting anyone to work on it at all.

That's one of the big reasons a lot of folk just glommed onto WebKit. Someone else is footing that particular bill.

It's not impossible, but it ain't easy.

Everything looks small from a distance.

Going to happily repeat this whenever I can.

Programming is a trade, like plumbing or electrical work. It's a set of skills that can be acquired without a dedicated degree, through experience, and there are plenty of very successful, legendary programmers who are examples. Many college courses focus on theory and concept over actual application, and skip things like coordination and collaboration, which are FAR MORE IMPORTANT for a career.

So, if you're in and get a svg screen that looks like what's down there, (or if you see weird, glitchy looking underlines or other things on pages like Wunderground or Google Docs), it's resistFingerprinting.

Go to about:config and add the domain to privacy.resistFingerprinting.exemptedDomains.

When I redid my kitchen, I installed LED undercabinet lights. They used a neat component system that let me daisy-chain units. I bought it because it was modular and I could swap in parts if one fails.

The system is no longer made. The recommended replacement system will involve thousands of dollars to redo the lights (including materials and labor).

In short, avoid using Kichler lighting.

Friendly PSA:

When a loved one passes leaving you the role of Executor of the estate, and you're going through who to notify about the recent death,

TELL THE BANK LAST!

They will freeze the account immediately upon hearing of the death and the only way to unfreeze it is to go through probate, which will take at least a month.

This is really important for things like online bill payments for utilities, mortgages, etc.

We have lots of hummingbirds.

There are plenty of healthy options for them, but damn if they don't all go for my feeder.

What should I call it?

You know who's going to make a fortune in the future?

Whoever builds a MITM box that intercepts various requests from appliances and returns "No Firmware Update. You're good to go!" available. Forever.

(That or whoever creates a drop in board that makes things stupid.)

TFW: Working on a project and think "Wow, a 3D printer might make this a whole lot easier."

But then realize that:
・You don't have a 3D printer.
・You don't have room for a 3D printer.
・You don't know anyone who would let you use their 3D printer.
・You have zero design skills to craft a part using a 3D printer.

And go back to hand sawing and filing ABS plastic plumbing fittings you got at the hardware store for $4.

Huh, so I just installed Audacious <https://audacious-media-player.org/> on my various computers to play all the music I've downloaded, ripped, and otherwise acquired and gotta admit, it's rather nice.

No right wing podcasters getting my money.
No union busting.
No insisting that I'm listening wrong or have to use their crappy app to load music.

It's rather delightful.

For folk that are not in the path of Totality (or under cloud cover, or are stuck inside, or...), friendly reminder that NASA is doing a live view party:

People can't shut up about it.
