Got two Turing tables and some microcode.

I work on back-end server-y type stuff at a place that keeps rockin' the free web. I like rust, python, and horrible puns (not necessarily in that order).

I tend to be nice for selfish reasons (I don't like hanging out with jerks).

Had an interesting conversation yesterday with someone that reminded me how weird Corporate and Open Source development is.

He asked what sort of qualifications and degrees are required to work on the rust compiler.

I told him: "Well, none. You could grab a ticket and create a PR. Now, getting that PR landed means it's going to be super scrutinized."

There are PhDs with dozens of AWS certs relying on code written by college drop-outs.

It's a really, really weird world.

For folk that are not in the path of Totality (or under cloud cover, or are stuck inside, or...), friendly reminder that NASA is doing a live view party:

Last time, the stream was really good, and I expect it'll be better this time around.

(Plus, you won't burn your retinas out.)

Friendly PSA:

When a loved one passes leaving you the role of Executor of the estate, and you're going through who to notify about the recent death,

TELL THE BANK LAST!

They will freeze the account immediately upon hearing of the death and the only way to unfreeze it is to go through probate, which will take at least a month.

This is really important for things like online bill payments for utilities, mortgages, etc.

Watching Google I/O's presentations.

They're pushing generative A.I. so much that I'm starting to count the number of fingers on presenters.

I have met with Google, Facebook, Apple, and other big tech orgs multiple times in the past.

One of the things I started doing when dealing with these orgs is state "Sorry, but for legal reasons, I'm not allowed to sign any NDAs." (I work for an openly public company.)

I like to use that as a gauge for how important the discussion will actually be. I've only had one meeting delayed for a bit which is perfectly fine.

If you want a standard to work, use it. Convince others that it's worth the time and effort, just like the folk did who got the attention of the big org. Big orgs have resources, but they don't have absolute control. That's what being open means.

I still hold that Firefox Multi-containers are like a hidden superpower.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Really useful when you want to group and sandbox sites, self organize tabs, and all sorts of other fun things.

Really wish more folk knew about that feature.

"The Why Files" is a youTube channel that regularly has videos with over a million views. They started as a kind of paranormal/fringe science channel that was mostly harmless, and that often debunked conspiracies.

But, they've moved beyond that in to material such as suppressed patents for cars that run on water. And treating climate change like it's a unresolved question. This has made their audience grow.

The things is they aren't just spitting lies. 1/

Just watched an interesting talk from Milo Rossi about this. Nothing super new, but he gives a presentation about how traditional education is less accessible than crackpot (think lecture halls vs TikTok).

It's the same problem over and over. Truth is behind a paywall, bullshit is everywhere else. Guess which gets more eyeballs?

Whole lot of EOL notifications for older versions of Mastodon,

> The 3.5.x branch will not receive any update—including security fixes—after 2023-12-31.

> The 4.0.x branch will not receive any update—including security fixes—after 2023-10-31.

Might want to make the time to update to the 4.1 branch if you've not done so already.

Dear Hallmark,

This Father's day, instead of showing Dads that just golf, mow or fish, how about updating to something more modern?

Like:
・playing video games
・skateboarding
・attending school board meetings
・wearing mirrored sunglasses in their SUV and screaming at their phone about politics
・selling treasured possessions to make up for crypto losses
・apologizing to managers for how their wife, Karen, screamed at them

Elon Musk is secretly pro-union.

Why do I say that?

Well, he's so focused on giving labor power he effectively forced them to strike against Tesla.

Truly, 8 dimensional Rochambeau going on there.

For what it's worth, I like "SLOP" for unwanted LLM generated content that pads out pages.

And if you want a backronym, I suggest "Selected LLM Generated Padding".

Yes, the backronym is wrong.

That's what makes it perfect.

Reading @mekkaokereke's ongoing thread about the importance of onboarding new teammates, thinking about the three different times I was sent to get an engineering onboarding program off the ground at my last job, with a budget of zero dollars and no outcomes that ever laddered up to anywhere.

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@mhoye @mekkaokereke

Can I say that the onboarding / mentoring stuff I do is partly for my own evil reasons?

The sooner I can get someone up-to-speed the sooner I can foist off some of my backlog onto them. I also build up stronger professional bonds with those individuals.

Likewise, mentoring is valuable to me to build up a network of professional contacts that I can use even outside of my current employer.

Frequently in tech, the bridges you build are worth more than the code you write.

Having worked with browsers for a very long time, I'm just going to point out that making a modern browser is exceptionally difficult. There are LOTS of hidden costs and gotchas ranging from CVE protections, to back-end service supports, to even just getting anyone to work on it at all.

That's one of the big reasons a lot of folk just glommed onto WebKit. Someone else is footing that particular bill.

It's not impossible, but it ain't easy.

Everything looks small from a distance.

And while I work for mozilla, I don't always support a lot of the executive decisions. That's been true for everywhere I've worked.

If you want to influence decisions:

  1. Use Firefox with Telemetry On.
(That's how we get feedback about things.)
  2. Use things like https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/idb-p/ideas to let folk know what you want or don't want. (Like the return of the RSS button)
  3. Contribute. As in: Write code. Submit PRs. Be active.
